In Summer 1997,
Saddleback College
held a seminar on Native American literatures and cultures.
This seminar was funded by a grant from the
National Endowment for the Humanities,
in order to encourage incorporation of Native American
materials across the curriculum, especially in the humanities.
Fourteen faculty members from Saddleback College and from the
Saddleback Valley and Capistrano Unified School Districts
participated in the month-long seminar. Paul Apodaca (Navajo),
the lead scholar, developed the framework for the seminar, in
which many guest lecturers participated.
This website presents some of the projects created by
participants as a result of the seminar, including an annotated
bibliography, lesson plans, assignments, and other materials for
courses in composition, literature, humanities, history,
anthropology, art history and other disciplines.
This is a work in progress through the Spring 1998
semester. More participant projects will be added, and some already
included here may be revised or added to. Last revision:
2/26/98.
The grant and seminar were co-directed by Susan Ruyle of the
Liberal Arts Division and Alannah Orrison of the Social and
Behavioral Sciences Division, under the administration of Daniel
E. Rivas, then Dean of Liberal Arts at Saddleback College.
