Saddleback College ASG 2012-2013
Special Topic Grant Announcement
Peer to Peer Mentoring

Closed: November 9, 2012

Description

The 2012-2013 Associated Student Government (ASG) of Saddleback College announces a new Special Topic Grant process designed to award new and innovative campus programming that directly benefits students.  ASG aspires to encourage the generation of new ideas and temporary semester-long areas of focus for campus programs, events, and initiatives.  A total of $10,000 is available to be awarded to this project.  Individual grant applications must not exceed $2000.

ASG’s Spring 2013 special topic is Peer to Peer Mentoring.  The Peer to Peer Mentoring Grant is a program designed to assist students in the social, personal, and academic acclimation to Saddleback College. Mentoring can be defined as a supportive relationship between an experienced student and a student requiring support in transition and adaptation to college. The purpose of having a mentoring relationship in college is to assist students with the challenges associated with the college experience. The grant will provide academic, personal, social, procedural, and motivational encouragement support for participating students during the challenging years of college. In addition to providing support, mentors can also connect their mentees to the student services departments across Saddleback College. Mentors must have an eager willingness to commit, learn, listen, and most specifically care for their mentee.

ASG’s intention with regard to choosing this topic is to prompt the creation of substantive and rich peer mentoring opportunities on campus.  ASG, by Board Policy, can’t fund instruction so any explicitly instructionally-related service learning opportunities will not be eligible for this grant (i.e., the service learning component of a course), but, the hope is that campus partners will come forward to present ideas on programs, events, and initiatives that will directly benefit the students of Saddleback College and provide a space to learn by working with their peers.

Process

1. Before applying, please read and understand the ASG Fund Policies (http://www.saddleback.edu/studentdevelopment/grant-assistance.html).

2. Please completely fill out the Grant Application Form available online at www.Saddleback.edu/asg. If you are selected as a finalist your division/department administrator will be asked to sign and approve of your application, so it’s a good idea for each applicant to notify their division leader of the intent to apply. All paperwork must be completed and submitted online no later than Friday, November 9th at 12:00pm.  In addition, please email a verification of submission to adipadova@saddleback.edu (since we’re using a new online form).

3. The ASG Budget Committee will then review, rank, deliberate upon, and award funds to the highest ranked applications. In addition, a member of the Budget Committee will be assigned to every approved proposal, as well as the Student Senator of the respective division. The member of the Budget Committee will report back to the Budget Committee on the progress and achievements of the program. The Student Senator of the respective division will assist on relaying information between ASG and the division, providing services such as publicizing and gathering student support.

4. Student Development will notify each grant recipient of the award via email no later than December 13th.   Student Development will also supply all associated ASG funding rules, regulations, and important documents.

5. If awarded you will be asked to complete an assessment of the program after it’s complete. A web link will be emailed to each grant awardee to complete this last step and to remain eligible for ASG grants in the future.
