Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About
Shyness but Were Too Shy to Ask
Bernardo J. Carducci, Ph.D., Director
Shyness Research Institute
Indiana University Southeast
New Albany, Indiana
Although more pervasive than commonly expected, shyness is a complex and highly misunderstood personality characteristic. This presentation is designed to help mental health professions and others become more familiar with what shyness is, as well as what it is not, by noting common misconceptions (e.g., the frequency of shyness) and misunderstandings about shyness (e.g., shyness and introversion are not the same thing) and discuss the characteristic features and operation of shyness. This presentation also covers the experience of shyness from the perspective of shy individuals, their responses to their shyness, and suggestions for helping shy individuals to be successfully shy. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.
