Saddleback Speech & Debate Team Place 7th Overall in Nationals [top] Published on Tuesday, April 24, 2012

The Saddleback College Forensics Team competed at the Phi Rho Pi Nationals on April 9-15, 2012 in Schamburg, Illinois, placing 7th overall in the country. With more than 59 colleges competing, Saddleback proved to be one of the most competitive institutions serving Speech and Debate competitors. The coaches, along with the one veteran and thirteen "rookie" students, navigated their way to a near-upset of the tournament. Saddleback was the only college in the country bringing two Reader's Theatre entries to the semi and final rounds garnering a bronze and silver medal. It appears that Saddleback has a "bulls-eye" entering the 2013 season as the favorites to possibly place in the top 3 in the country. Rolland Petrello, director of Forensics at Moorpark College and eventual tournament winners, was quoted as saying, "The entire country is afraid of Saddleback. Saddleback will be scary-good next year. Watch out."

Team Leader Lucas Ochoa stated, "We are pleased with the results at this year's National Tournament. It was incredible to see our students huddle up at the awards ceremony and declare that Saddleback would be back with a vengeance in 2013. Several students have already begun working on next year's speeches. With the hard work of the coaches and students, I'm confident that Saddleback will be a huge force in the forensics community. I'm incredibly proud of my Reader's Theatre. Watching them compete in the final round was a culmination of hard work and enthusiasm. It was fun knocking Mt. Sac out of the Semi Final round with my Reader's Theatre "II". I look forward to seeing what we can do next year at nationals in Los Angeles. We'll be ready!"

Co-Team Director Larry Radden stated, "Phi Rho Pi Nationals was an amazing experience for all 18 of us. I feel that this group interacts more like a big family then just a team. Aside from the joy of being around these amazing students and coaches, I was also ecstatic with the results. We were the only school to advance our Readers Theatre teams to the out rounds and that was extremely difficult because every show was fantastic. The fact that most of our team was recruited at the beginning of the semester and new to the activity is also a testament of hard work, talent and commitment. I would also like to highlight the accomplishments of Olivia Noceda who in her first semester on the team managed to not only receive Bronze in Dramatic Interpretation and Poetry Interpretation, she was also a pleasure to work with in my Reader's Theatre. She received her third bronze medal in that event! Hat's off to a powerful year."

Dr. Tod A. Burnett, President of Saddleback College stated, "Saddlebackâ's forensics team is truly phenomenal. From the superb performance of our students to the dedication of our talented coaches, it’s been a real pleasure watching our team improve and become a force to be reckoned with. I commend all of our forensics students for their amazing work this year, and look forward to seeing the Saddleback team progress to new heights next year."

Bart McHenry, Dean of Fine Arts and Media Technology, stated, "I am thrilled with the ongoing success of our forensics team. They have continually proven themselves to be outstanding during this academic year. The fact that we rank nationally while competing against four-year institutions is an accomplishment I am most proud of. Congratulations to our students and coaches for a job well done."

Here are the individual results:

KSBR Birthday Bash 2012 [top] Published on Friday, March 23, 2012

Mission Viejo, CA.  The 2012 KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival, presented by Saddleback College radio station KSBR (88.5 FM) Saddleback College, returns to the Village Green at Oso Viejo Park on Sunday, May 27, 2012, with a new twist to the already popular event. The first annual Taste of the Bash will feature over 25 restaurants showing off their finest creations. The Taste is an added value so those purchasing tickets to the concert will be admitted to the Taste of the Bash for no additional charge. The Birthday Bash is the major fundraising event for KSBR-FM, Mission Viejo's own community radio station at Saddleback College.

The Bash has around 40 jazz artists that gather to play at the unique event; jazz headliners often leave their own bands behind to play with each other. Brenda Russell, Boney James, David Benoit, Hiroshima, Greg Adams, and Peter White are just a few of the biggest stars in contemporary jazz who have appeared in Mission Viejo for the annual KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival. Because of contractual obligations, many of the biggest stars cannot be announced until they actually step on stage, which makes the event even more fun and surprising.

The event will include a special tribute to Veterans. Saddleback College's Veterans Memorial is the most significant tribute to veterans at any community college campus in the nation. In recognition of this event and the role that the college's VETS (Veterans Education and Transition Services) Center plays in the community, the festivities will include a color guard performance and a special musical tribute to kick off the concert. In addition, veterans and active military personnel may purchase general admission tickets for just $25 through the Saddleback College VETS Center (949) 582-4252. The Center is open Monday -- Thursday 9am to 4:30pm and Friday 9am to 12 noon. Doors open at 3:00 pm; the Taste of the Bash will run from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.

Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors at Saddleback College [top] Published on Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Mission Viejo, CA.  Saddleback Civic Light Opera is thrilled to present Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a musical for the whole family to enjoy. Directed and choreographed by K. C. Gussler and musically directed by Lex Leigh, this biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to life in this delightful musical parable. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

In this vibrant story, a narrator tells us we are about to hear the story of a person like any one of us - a dreamer - whose dreams come true. We jump back to Biblical times and meet Jacob, who had twelve sons of whom Joseph was his favorite. To show his love for Joseph, Jacob gives him a multi-colored coat. Joseph's brothers resent the favoritism and the fact that Joseph has high aspirations. But we won't give away what happens to Joseph due to the jealousy of his brothers. Come to the McKinney Theatre at Saddleback College on June 8th --24th to find out for yourselves!

Dates: June 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 at 7:30pm and June 10, 17, 24 at 2:30pm. Please note there will be a Buzz Night 2 for 1 Special on June 16 at 7:30pm. No more bees but the buzz lives on! Dames at Sea at Saddleback College [top] Published on Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Mission Viejo, CA.  Saddleback Civic Light Opera is thrilled to present Dames at Sea, book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise, in the McKinney Theatre on July 13th through the 29th. Directed and choreographed by K. C. Gussler and musically directed by Jimmy Vann, this all song-and-dance musical will delight audience members of all ages. Small-town girl Ruby arrives in the Big Apple with only her tap shoes, a song in her heart, and a burning desire to become a Broadway star. She falls in love with Dick, a sailor who just happens to be a songwriter. They can sing a lovely duet but can they save a Broadway musical when calamity strikes? An affectionate spoof of the grand and glorious Busby Berkeley movie musicals of the 1930s Dames at Sea is an all-singing, all-dancing, old-fashioned tap extravaganza that charms and delights with the catchy old-timey tunes like Broadway Baby, Choo-Choo Honeymoon, The Sailor of My Dreams and Dames at Sea.
