Associated Student Government
Testimonials
Why should you join the leadership program at Saddleback College? Read the testimonials below:
"Being a part of Associated Student Government (ASG) at Saddleback College has helped me grow as a student, leader and overall as a person. At the end of my second year on student government I came to realizethat my drive and hunger to conquer the world around me had grown exponentially. I had the lessons and tools to perform any task at hand. I acquired the knowledge to plan, problem-solve, delegate and mediate when needed. Teamwork became my specialty. Being able to work in groups of two or twenty was my niche. One may say that ASG is practice for the “real world” but I look at it as the “real world” with commentary. Every program planned, dimes spent and dollars allocated was all done in real time with the help of advisors along the way. Now that it is all said and done, I know the skills I have obtained will carry me far through my educational and career goals and I have ASG to thank."
- Delainey Taylor, ASG President 2009-2010 (2010 Statement)
"Student Development was crucial to my success in academia and was indispensable to my growth not only as a student, but as an individual. There's no way to describe the way the staff in Student Development truly cares about its students and how hard they work to ensure that they live up to their potential. They were always there when I needed anything. They were my support when I felt like I couldn't cope with all of life's stresses. They were my friends because they truly wanted me to succeed and took the time to get to know my hopes and dreams. Without their dedication to students and helpful guidance I wouldn't be half as strong as I am today or truly know that I am capable of handling anything that comes my way."
- Kalin Kelly, ASG President 2008-2009 (2010 Statement)
"ASG was an irreplaceable part of my developing. My experience consisted of hard work, learning from others, friendships, self-discovery, growth and patience. I learned that you can't do it all by yourself. Delegating is a necessity. Everyone has different types of leadership. View each individual’s style with an open mind because in the end you may learn something from them. You must work as a team to accomplish even the smallest of tasks. Motivation and togetherness are key. I can honestly say that were I to be without my ASG experience I wouldn't be half as sure of my ability to work productively with a group or half as confident in my ability to lead others in a positive manner."
- Kalin Kelly, ASG President 2008-2009 (2009 Statement)
"Participating in ASG gave me an opportunity to become a leader and learn valuable skills that I could not have as a college undergrad at a community college. ASG made my undergraduate experience memorable and unforgettable. Coming out of high school with a feeling of uncertainty, ASG was a haven, keeping me on track and helping me become the person I am today. ASG and Student Development allows a student to surround themselves with nothing but the best influence! I became a better student, sister, and friend. The skills I learned while volunteering in ASG are priceless and affect my everyday life even as a graduate of UCLA. I can proudly say that most of my best memories of college were being on ASG. Those moments of participating in leadership conferences, retreats and simple group activities are moments that you will cherish forever!"
- CJ Park, ASG President 2007-2008 (2010 Statement)
"Student Development played a pivotal role in helping me get acquainted with the Saddleback community. My fear and anxiety of going to a community college was immediately soothed with the leadership of student development. They allowed me to understand the pivotal role that community college played, the importance of higher education, and the transfer process. Without it, I would have never been able to transfer in one-year to the University of California, Los Angeles. The Director of Student Development fostered the values and principles that college students need to embody in order to be successful. Meanwhile, the Senior Administrative Assistant aided in keeping all programming efforts organized and readily available for viewing. The Clubs Advisor/Student Development Assistant was important because it worked directly with students who were trying to maneuver around the Saddleback College bureaucracy, and kept students outside of student government on the same page with student government officers. Without one piece of this trinity, the office would have failed miserably and not been as successful as it was in helping student government officers who in turned helping the student body. I thank Audra, Connie, and Erin for their hard work and dedication to us and the knowledge that they respectively imbued onto us."
- Andrae Russel Patrick Vigil-Romero, 2008-2009 (2010 Statement)
"Saddleback College ASG to me - in a word, amazing. Although I only served on it for one year, I was able to acculturate from high school to the college level through the social interaction of ASG. I met people that inspired me to work hard, hold strong my personal convictions and, to above all, be myself. Beyond my own personal growth that I experience during my tenure, I was able to meet life-long friends and acquire new skills, such as administrative, financial budgeting and new effective leadership skills, that I would not have been able to do elsewhere. I served as the Secretary of Executive Cabinet for the 2008-2009 year and learned through my own pursuits that I was able to balance multiple projects - be it work, school, ASG and a handful of clubs and still maintain my sanity. My time in ASG was well-spent and I thank the Student Development for making my experience what it was - one that I will not forget. For those who are possibly interested in ASG, I'd highly recommend it - it is an experience that I would not trade for the World."
- Andrae Russel Patrick Vigil-Romero, 2008-2009 (2009 Statement)
"Before my experiences on Student Government, I possessed a rather vague and narrow conception of exactly who and what a leader was. Most specifically, I remained convinced that leadership was an inborn characteristic that was incapable of maturing and developing in a natural progression. Yet, this personal impression of mine has altered drastically during my two years of participation within ASG. Contrary to anything which I could have imagined, I have discovered that the essential elements of a proficient leader—empathy, creativity, affability, accountability, determination, morality—are characteristics which thrive through experience and which are constantly evolving and changing. But, perhaps most important of all, I have learned that it is in the cultivation of strong relationships that leaders truly emerge. It is through drawing out the individual gifts that others possess and then re-routing that positive energy towards a collective, unified effort that we can finally arrive at a legitimate and profound conclusion. Truly, the measure of leadership is not in the consummation of various personal endeavors, but rather, in the exact extent to which one individual has spurred a positive growth in another. To my gratitude, the leaders on Saddleback College Student Government have taught me the tremendous value and productivity of this inclusivity. Moreover, they have shown me the strength in diversity, the efficiency and wonder of collaboration, and most importantly, they have allowed me to develop both as a leader and a human being."
- Travis Fuller, ASG Treasurer, 2008-2009 (2009 Statement)
"Prior to ASG I felt like another number at saddleback. It was the limbo I was waiting in until I found something better to move on to. However, through student government I met hardworking, goal oriented students and learned about various opportunities available to me at saddleback. Saddleback was thus transformed from a commuter school to a home that helped me feel empowered as a young adult. I learned that change does not always come from the top. Change can come from students, like myself. Associated Student Government helped me find my voice while teaching me leadership skills and perseverence. ASG always was open to the causes I found important and served as an outlet to facilitate activism. As a current student at UCLA, ASG holds a special place in my heart, as the place that taught me my full potential and the place that put me on the path I am on today."
- Naseam Alavi, 2008-2009 (2010 Statement)
"As far as ASG goes, without advisors us students leaders would not be able to fufill the growing needs of the student body. They are like a walking handbooks with all the information we could ever need and answers to every question we could ever have. There is so much to learn about how to properly run ASG as well as how to deal with money, and this information is so much that had we not had advisors, this information would not be able to be passed down from ASG generation to generation; also, has the student leaders had to be self guided as well as self taught it would slow down our effectiveness tremendously! The student body cannot function without student leaders and they cannot function with our advisors, and many schools have more advisors than our school does! We are under staffed and out advisors take on some many extra jobs. Saddleback would not be as successful without its outstanding extracurricular activities. I should know, I have participated in almost every one of them we have, from sports, to wind ensemble, to ASG- all of it! We need these advisors!"
- Laura Chapman, 2009-2010 (returning 2010-2011)
“I can’t think of many other experiences that have changed my life as much as student government. I came to Saddleback as an apathetic student, taking little care in my work, or myself but I’m leaving the president of two clubs, the Vice-president of ICC and with a 4.0 GPA. At the risk of sounding cliché, I owe it all to ASG: specifically, the staff at the Student Development office.
In my mind though, they are synonymous- Student government and the staff in the SD office. Without the staff, there is no functional ASG. We (as student government) put on almost every event on campus. The ones we don’t put on, we usually fund. If there is any student life resembling an actual university on campus, it can directly be attributed to our advisors in the SD office. They help us when we have problems, they encourage us when we don’t. They teach us when we need to be taught, and they let us figure things out when they know we should. They are, in my mind, not only brilliant mentors, but incredible friends.
We already struggle with trying to meet with them. They are constantly busy, and any reduction in staff, or increase in their already onerous workload would mean that not only would the quantity of contact with them decrease, but as would the quality.”
- Justin Huft, 2009-2010 (returning 2010-2011)
“When I first started at Saddleback College I felt like I faced 2 big challenges: staying on track with so much freedom and making friends who could encourage me to achieve my goals. I met some of the greatest people though student government, many of whom transferred with me and proved to be great influences. Our advisors went further than their obligations in ensuring that we could operate beyond our abilities. Together we achieved so much and made a substantial difference in our community. Without the advice and guidance of Audra and Erin, I don't think we would have collaborated and excelled as well as we did. I truly think joining ASG made the difference when it came to transferring on time and to a great school, and I advise all of my friends entering Saddleback to apply.”
“Imagine being left out. Feeling unsure about whether or not you like school or even want to be there. ASG works extremely hard to incorporate students on and off campus by holding various activities such as student clubs, club advertising fairs, canned food and turkey drives, holiday gift drives (every family who applied was adopted this year), AIDS awareness, drug awareness, several lectures led by fellow students who share their personal life stories, Earth Week, beach clean up days, ASB stamp sales, international student participation, barbeques, concerts for Saddleback College's aspiring musicians, homecoming (a huge event in itself), blood drives, student participated activities, movie nights, dances, high school recruitment days, each serving ASG student is also required to complete service hours and serve in school wide committees along with staff, and so many other things vital to whether or not those "borderline students" stay in school. This is positive to all students who need something to supplement their education. We need ASG for this school to function.
My high school experience was horrible. I seriously had my doubts about college and only went because my family expected me to. Now I am in student government, work full-time, I have taken honors classes, have a strong GPA, have been in the newspaper because of an ASG event, and I am applying to UC schools in the fall! I love this school but I am stressed out most of the time. Student Government is hard! Spinning my wheels takes a lot of time and energy that could be applying even more to my classes. I will not give up though. Student government is my home and Audra and Erin have inspired me to keep going despite how hard life can be. I have learned more in this institution than in my classes and I finally have a chance to belong.”
