Saddleback College ASG

ASSOCIATED STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Student Senate

Senate is one of the three main branches in Associated Student Government here at Saddleback College.  We work hard to properly obtain desirable results for the student body as well as the divisions on campus by having a student senator represent both designated divisions and student's desires to provide funding for clubs and school events. Senate has implemented a few new ideas this year to reach as many students as possible such as conducting surveys, starting a new grant program, and routing division run funding requests directly through division leaders.  We have already allocated money to the divisions based on historical data.  So now only student organizations will be funded through ASG's revenue from our ASB stamp sales. In the past Senate has advocated for students talking to division deans, this year we are taking it a step further by surveying students from each division, and serving on all college-wide committees. We will be writing resolutions based on what the surveys say the student body really wants.

Provided is an example of how students are represented in college & district committees:

  • Senator attends committee meeting and reports back to Student Senate.
  • Senators are then sent out to poll students in respected divisions.
  • Original senator reports back to the committee with results.

The main goal of Senate is to represent the student body in the college governance process.
As stated in Board Policy 5627 Students:

“The Associated Students of the colleges of the South Orange County Community College District shall be given an opportunity to participate in the formulation and development of district policies and procedures that have a significant effect on students, as defined by law (Title 5, Calif. Code of Regulations, Section 51023.7 and Calif. Ed. Code, Section 70902[b][7]). The selection of student representatives to serve on SOCCCD committees or task forces shall be made after consultation with the Associated Student Governments of the respective colleges. The opinions and recommendations of the students will be given every reasonable consideration.”

Pursuant to this the Student Senate appoints student representatives to serve on college and district committees to represent the student voice in the governance process.
