Returns to Saddleback for his sophomore season after playing in 22 games for the Gauchos as a freshman in 2010. He finished fourth on the team as a freshman with 19 strikeouts in 35.2 innings pitched. Helmkamp came to Saddleback from
Chico State, where he did not play baseball. Previous to Chico State, Helmkamp graduated from Aliso Niguel High School in 2008, earning First Team All-South Coast League recognition and playing on the Orange County All Star Team. He plans to major in criminal justice.
