2008 Cross Country News



Both the men's and women's teams each placed eighth in their respective races at the Southern California Regional championship race at Soccer Park in Bakersfield.

Bobby Stangl and Matt Van Dyke placed 27th (20:49) and 28th (20:52), respectively, out of 202 finishers to help the men's team post 252 points and edge out El Camino (257 points) for eighth place in the 28-team event. San Bernardino Valley won the men's race with 52 points while Orange Coast placed second (105), Riverside was sixth (216), and Rio Hondo was seventh (241). Chris McDonald placed 49th overall (21:08) for the Gauchos with A.J. Kimura placing 64th (21.19) and Colin McRoberts rounded out the scoring by placing 88th overall (21:37).

For the women, Ines Flores and Kelley Breen placed 34th (19:15) and 36th (19:16), respectively, in a field of 196 finishers to help the Gauchos place eighth in a 27-team field. Christina Cain was 46th overall (19:34) while Christine Hughes was 90th (20:53) and Sarah Pacific finished 126th (21:47) to round out the scoring. Saddleback's team score of 306 edged out San Diego Mesa (307) for eighth place. Glendale won the women's race with 68 points, followed by Southwestern (77) and Orange Coast (79). Riverside was fourth (109) and Santa Ana placed seventh (292).

The Saddleback men's and women's teams both qualified for the State Championship race which will be held at Woodward Park in Fresno on November 22.




The Saddleback men's and women's cross country teams each placed third in their respective races at the Orange Empire Conference championships held Saturday at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

The men's team scored 59 points to trail Orange Coast (32) and Riverside (46). Chris McDonald placed fourth overall (20:26) on the 4-mile course and Matt Van Dyke placed seventh (20:45) as both runners earned all-conference honors in the field of 83 finishers. Bobby Stangl placed 11th overall (20:51) and AJ Kimura placed 13th (20:58) giving the Gauchos a solid corps of runners in the Top 15.

In the women's race, Saddleback scored 86 points and was edged out by Orange Coast (23) and Riverside (40) while able to stay ahead of Santa Ana (91). Ines Flores led the Gauchos by placing 15th out of 65 finishers, clocking a time of 20:12 in the 5,000-meter race. Kelley Breen placed 21st (20:34) while Christina Cain finished 23rd (20:41) and Rebecca Cain placed 26th (21:09).

Both teams will advance to the Southern California Regional championship race which will be held on Friday, November 7, at the Soccer Park in Bakersfield starting at 2:00 p.m. The state meet is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, at Woodward Park in Fresno.




The Saddleback men's cross country team placed third out of 24 teams and the women's team placed fourth out of 23 teams as both teams enjoyed a successful outing at the Mt. SAC Invitational held on the Walnut campus course.

Pima (AZ) won the men's race with 82 points, followed by the host Mounties (111) with Saddleback (115) close on their heels. Saddleback's first four runners finished in the top 20 of the 140 finishers. However, there were over 50 runners that finished between Saddleback's fourth and fifth runners (five runners count towards a team score). Matt Van Dyke finished fourth overall (21:38) while Chris McDonald placed ninth (22:12). Bobby Stangl completed the 4-mile course in 22:32 to place 13th and AJ Kimura placed 20th overall (22:56).

In the women's race, Saddleback scored 118 points to finish comfortably in fourth place behind Southwestern (31), Mt. San Antonio (51), and Pima (95). Sophomore Ines Flores placed seventh overall (19:11) out of 107 ladies who finished the 3-mile course. Rebecca Cain placed 12th overall (19:43) with Christina Cain placing 21st (20:23) and Kelley Breen placing 25th (20:44).

The Gauchos will have a week off before running in the Orange Empire Conference championship on Saturday, November 1, at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa starting at 9:00 a.m.



Saddleback finished in the Top 6 of both the men's and women's races at the Brubaker Inviational held in Irvine Regional Park. Matt Van Dyke placed sixth overall in the men's race in a time of 20:46 to help the Gauchos men's team finish sixth out of 16 teams. Chris McDonald placed 23rd (21:18) out of 142 finishers while AJ Kimura placed 33rd (21:31) and Bobby Stangl ended up 60th (22:16).

In the women's race, Ines Flores placed 10th overall (19:30) out of 107 finishers, helping Saddleback to a fifth place team finish out of 13 scoring teams. Rebecca Cain (20:01) placed 23rd while Christina Cain (20:58) placed 41st and Kelley Breen (21:14) crossed in 52nd place.




Saddleback finished seventh in the women's race and eighth in the men's race at the Southern California Regional preview race run Friday at Soccer Park in Bakersfield. Ines Flores finished 21st (19:35) in a field of 260 runners on the 5-kilometer course with Rebecca and Christina Cain finishing 49th (20:32) and 55th (20:41), respectively. Christine Hughes placed 71st (21:09) and Sarah Hommes placed 74th (21:12) to account for the team score of 221. Conference foe Orange Coast (48 points) won the women's race while Santa Ana (357) was two places behind Saddleback.

In the men's race, Bobby Stangl was the top Gaucho to finish as he placed 13th (21:00) out of 345 finishers on the 4-mile course. Chris McDonald was 43rd overall (21:38) while Matt Van Dyke finished 58th (21:55). AJ Kimura placed 70th (22:05) and Colin McRoberts placed 118th (22:35) to account for Saddleback's 284 team points. Conference foe Orange Coast (92 points) won the men's race while Riverside (321 points) finished two places behind Saddleback.



The Saddleback women’s cross country team placed fifth overall and the men’s team placed sixth at the Orange Coast Classic/OEC Preview meet held Saturday, Sept. 20, at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.

Saddleback sophomore Ines Flores placed 24th overall (20:46) in the field of 173 finishers, helping the Gauchos to a team score of 182 points.  Conference foes Orange Coast (1st) and Santa Ana (4th) posted scores of 49 and 166, respectively, to finish ahead of the Gauchos.  Freshman Rebecca Cain placed 28th overall (21:01) while Sarah Hommes placed 46th (21:44) and Christina Cain placed 49th (21:48).  There were 19 teams which scored in this race.

The men’s team was led by Matt Van Dyke who finished eighth overall (20:34) in the field of 218 finishers, helping Saddleback to a team score of 157.  There were 25 men’s teams which scored in the meet.
Bobby Stangl placed 15th (20:51) and AJ Kimura placed 36th (21:30) while Colin McRoberts (48th) and Chris McDonald (52nd) rounded out the scoring for the Gauchos.

Conference rivals Orange Coast (3rd) and Riverside (4th) finished just above the Gauchos, scoring 106 and 128 points, respectively.

The cross country teams will have a week off to prepare for the Southern California Regional preview to be held in Bakersfield on Friday, October 3.




Saddleback sophomore Matt Van Dyke won the individual title at the Palomar Invitational on Friday (Sept. 12), helping the Gauchos to a second place finish as a team.

Van Dyke, who finished second at the Bakersfield Invitational during his freshman season, captured his first college invitational with a time of 21:34 over the 4-mile course. Teammate Bobby Stangl placed fourth overall out of 52 finishers with a time of 21:47 and AJ Kimura placed eighth (22:40).

Southwestern College won the team title with 44 points, narrowly edging past Saddleback which had 49 points. Cuyamaca placed third with 83 points.

In the women’s race, Saddleback only suited up four runners and didn’t receive a team score (five scores count toward a team score). However, Kelley Breen placed seventh overall in a time of 21:04 on the 5-kilometer course. Twins Christina and Rebecca Cain finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in times of 21:45 and 21:56.

The Gauchos will run again on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the OEC Preview held at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa starting at 9:00 a.m.
