Gaucho Men's Golf News from 2009

Mike RaeThe men’s golf team at Saddleback announced this week that two players from its 2009 squad will be moving on to 4-year universities.  Sophomores Ray Biggerstaff and Nick Ellis have committed to local universities, according to head coach Mike Rae.

Biggerstaff will continue his career at the University of Redlands after finishing his sophomore season at Saddleback with a 77.8 scoring average.  He improved dramatically down the stretch for the Gauchos, shooting his low round of the season (71) at Tijeras Creek on April 13 and averaging 75 over the last six matches of the season.  Redlands plays in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (DIII) and finished ninth in the country at the NCAA championships in May.  Biggerstaff came to Saddleback from Servite High School in Anaheim.

Ellis will continue his golf career at Cal State Fullerton, who will bring back their golf program after a two-decade absence.  Ellis led Saddleback with a 76.5 scoring average during the season, finishing with the low round of the day on four occasions for the Gauchos.  Cal State Fullerton competes in the Big West Conference (DI) and last had men’s golf in 1987-88.  Ellis came to Saddleback from Northwood High School in Irvine.

Saddleback continues to improve down the stretch as was evident by the team's first-place finish in a four-team conference match held at Tijeras Creek Golf Club on Monday, the Gauchos' home course.

Ray Biggerstaff earned medalist honors after carding a 1-under-par 71 and was assisted by teammates Nick Gomez (73), Henry Huang (74), Bryan Taylor (75) and Nick Ellis (76) as Saddleback finished with a 5-man team score of 369. Palomar also finished with a 369 while Cuyamaca posted a 389 and Irvine Valley finished at 393.

The golf team will wrap up the regular conference schedule on Wednesday, April 15, at Cuyamaca College, playing on the Cottonwood Country Club course.

Saddleback split a pair of conference golf matches during the week, defeating Riverside on Monday and then falling to Irvine Valley on Wednesday.

The Gauchos shot a team score of 397 to edge host Riverside (400) at the Victoria Country Club on Monday with Henry Huang and Bryan Taylor each carding 77's for Saddleback to share medalist honors. The Gauchos then totalled a season-high 405 at Oak Creek Golf Course to fall to Irvine Valley (378). Nick Ellis carded a 75 with Sam Rodriguez and Nick Gomez each adding 78's.

Saddleback is now 1-2 in conference play.

Saddleback began the 2009 season by jumping right into Orange Empire Conference play, facing Orange Coast and Santa Ana colleges on the Santa Ana Country Club course.

As it was OCC's home course, Saddleback and Santa Ana were going head-to-head against the host school. OCC shot a team-score of 374 to win the match with Saddleback (383) battling closely and Santa Ana (396) farther back. Sam Rodriguez led the Gauchos with a 74 while Nick Gomez carded a 75 and sophomore Nick Ellis adding a 76.

The Gauchos were the state runners-up in 2008.
