5/17/10: Fisher competes at state championship
Cole Fisher was Saddleback's lone representative at the community college men's golf state championship held Monday at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont. What was supposed to be a beautiful sunny day in Southern California turned into a day filled with morning drizzle, cold breezes, low temperatures, and high scores.
Fisher posted a morning round of 78 and carded a 76 in the afternoon round to finish with a one-day, 36-hole total of 154 to finish tied for 28th place in the tournament.
West Hills College (Lemoore) captured the first state title in school history by posting a team score of 745. Chabot College placed second (751) and Cypress claimed third place (754) after leading the competition by one stroke following the morning round.
Connor Covington of Santiago Canyon captured the individual medalist honors with a 4-under-par total of 140 (70-70).

4/14/10: Golf post-season dreams end at Santa Ana CC
Saddleback's golf team needed to get past host Orange Coast College in a four-team match at the Santa Ana Country Club on Wednesday if the Gauchos were going to have a shot at a post-season berth. Although Saddleback (375) edged Riverside (377) and Cypress (386), the Gauchos couldn't keep pace with Orange Coast (364) and fell to 7-9 in conference play, likely just one victory away from qualifying for the post-season.
Cole Fisher shot a 73 with Jordan Rachman carding a 74 and Chris Lungo adding a 75 as all five of Saddleback's scorers were in the 70s. However, Orange Coast had all five of its golfers card 75-or-better to get victories over all three conference opponents.
Although Saddleback won't be sending a team into the post-season, Coach Mike Rae was pleased that four Saddleback golfers will advance as individuals. The conference championship is scheduled for Monday, May 3, at Los Serranos.
3/30/10: Golf finishes second at Tijeras Creek
The Saddleback men’s golf team battled with some of the best in Southern California and finished second at Tijeras Creek Golf Club on Monday. The Gauchos were two shots back of Palomar College as Saddleback’s Cole Fisher took home individual medalist honors.
Fisher was a pillar of consistency on Monday, making just one bogey on the entire round while rolling in four birdies. The 3-under round for the sophomore from Corona del Mar was the lowest round of the season for the Gauchos, besting his round of 73 in early February.
Saddleback finished at 383 as a team, just two strokes behind Palomar and seven strokes in front of Orange Coast.
The Gauchos will take to the links again on Wednesday when they host Cuyamaca College, Santiago Canyon College and Irvine Valley College at Tijeras Creek at 7:00 AM.
Team Scores
Palomar 381
Saddleback 383
Orange Coast 390
3/08/10: Golf team gets victory over Dons
Sophomore Cole Fisher carded a 1-over-par 75 which would turn out to be the second-lowest score of the day, helping Saddleback to a team score of 392 and a victory over Santa Ana at the Los Serranos golf course on Monday.
Saddleback teammates Chris Lungo (77) and Tommy Hug (79) also carded scores in the 70's to help pace the Gauchos, who will host three of their next four conference matches on the home Tijeras Creek course.
3/03/10: Gauchos edged by Comets and Tigers
The Saddleback golf team was edged out by its hosts in a pair of Orange Empire Conference golf matches this week, falling to Palomar on the Twin Oaks course and to Riverside on the Victoria Country Club course.
At Twin Oaks on Monday, Saddleback's Jordan Rachman carded a 1-under-par 71 to lead Saddleback to a team score of 382. But Palomar's Scott Wyers posted a 68 to earn medalist honors and helped his Comet team to a 375 score.
On Wednesday the Gauchos traveled to Riverside to face the Tigers on the Victoria Country Club course. Cole Fisher carded a 2-over-par 74 for the Gauchos with Tyler Stubbs posting a 77 and Chris Lungo and Rachman finishing with 78's to help Saddleback to a 386 team score. However, Riverside's Nick Paez carded a 73 to earn medalist honors and the Tigers posted a team score of 376.
Saddleback will host its next three matches on its home Tijeras Creek course. The Gauchos will host Santa Ana, Cypress, and Riverside on the greens on Wednesday, March 17 (a good day for wearing green).
2/10/10: Men’s golf sunk by Cypress on Navy course
The men’s golf team was edged by Cypress on the Chargers' home course, 370-385, in the opening match of Orange Empire Conference play.
Jordan Rachman carded a 3-over-par 74 for the Gauchos while Cole Fisher and Tyler Stubbs each turned in 76's. But Cypress' top two players both shot even-par rounds of 71 and the next three players all ended up with 76's to edge out the Gauchos.
Cuyamaca was a distant third with a team score of 402, but the conference guests only play against the host school so Saddleback falls to 0-1 in conference play.
