5/5/11: Stubbs wins conference player-of-the-year
The Saddleback men’s golf team is headed to the Southern California Regional Tournament next Monday at Bermuda Dunes Country Club and got some added accolades this week when three players were named to the all-conference team. Tyler Stubbs was named the conference player-of-the-year and he was joined on the team by Terry Ko and Chris Lungo.
Stubbs was a pillar of consistency for the Gauchos, leading the team with a 74.1 scoring average. He was amazingly consistent, shooting between 71 and 78 for every round of the season. Stubbs finished with the seventh lowest scoring average in the state.
Ko was right on Stubbs’ heels, averaging 74.9 for the season. Ko had a team low round of 70 during the season, finishing with the No. 13 scoring average in the state.
Lungo came on strong down the stretch for the Gauchos and at one point had consecutive rounds of 72, 71, 74 and 72 in finishing with a 77.3 scoring average. He finished with the No. 36 scoring average in the state.
Saddleback finished 13-4 in Orange Empire Conference play, good enough for second place. The Gauchos will tee off at Bermuda Dunes in the SoCal Championships on Monday tied with a No. 2 ranking in the south.
5/3/11: Gauchos come up empty in OEC Finals
The Saddleback men’s golf team entered the Orange Empire Conference golf finals on Monday with a one-game lead on rival Orange Coast College and a chance to secure its first conference title in three years. Unfortunately, the Gauchos had one of their worst performances of the year at Los Serranos Golf Course, finishing fourth and letting the Pirates slip ahead of them in the final season standings.
Saddleback was considered the favorites heading into Monday’s conference finale, but picked a bad time to get a case of the yips. The Gauchos finished in fourth out of four teams, finishing the regular season 13-4, and in second place in the Orange Empire Conference.
Meanwhile, Orange Coast won one of the closest conference finals matches ever, beating Irvine Valley by one shot and Santiago Canyon by two. The Pirates regrouped after a mediocre first round to finish the second 18 holes at 7-over-par (367), to overcome both Santiago Canyon and Irvine Valley, who both led the Pirates heading into the final 18 holes of play. Saddleback trailed the leaders (Santiago Canyon) by 10 shots heading into the final 18 holes after shooting 19-over-par (379) in the early session. The Gauchos shot an identical score on the final 18 holes of play, as they were never able to get on track.
Jordan Guillen (SCC) and Mark Parkovich (OCC) both tied for medalist honors by shooting 2-under-par scores of 142. Guillen had the low round of the day, firing a 3-under-par 69 in the final 18 holes. Saddleback’s Tyler Stubbs and Brett Woolston both finished tied for 12th place overall after shooting 5-over-par 149. The low round of the day for the Gauchos came from Terry Ko, who shot 2-under-par (70) in the final 18 holes after opening with a disappointing round of 82 in the early session.
Saddleback will compete again in the regional finals next Monday at Bermuda Dunes Country Club.

4/21/11: Lungo leads Gauchos to key win over IVC
The Saddleback men’s golf team earned a key victory on Wednesday when it traveled to Oak Creek Golf Club to take on inter-district rival Irvine Valley College on their own track. The Gauchos received a solid performance by Chris Lungo in defeating the Lasers 388-393 to improve to 13-1 in conference play.
Saddleback is in the midst of a battle for the Orange Empire Conference title with Orange Coast College, but needed to win on Wednesday to keep the Pirates one-game back in the conference race headed into the OEC Championships a week from Monday.
The Gauchos did their part, led by sophomore Lungo. His one-over-par score of 72 at Oak Creek helped him win medalist honors kept a pesky Irvine Valley team from pulling off the upset. Lungo has shot 72, 71, 74 and 72 in his past four rounds of play, giving the Gauchos another force in the lineup down the stretch.
Saddleback improved to 13-1 in conference play with the win and will now have 11 days off to prepare for the Orange Empire Conference Championships on May 2 at Los Serranos Golf Course. The final 36-hole event is worth four games, as the top-5 teams from the conference are invited to the event.
Other Gaucho finishers included Terry Ko (76), Tyler Stubbs (78), Brett Woolston (81) and Barron Fankhauser (81).
On another note, Orange Coast defeated Riverside on Wednesday, 385-391, at Victoria Country Club to remain game back of the Gauchos in the standings.
4/14/11: Men’s golf loses first conference match
The Saddleback men’s golf team had been rolling through the Orange Empire Conference competition all season long, starting 12-0 headed into Wednesday’s match against Orange Coast College at Santa Ana Country Club. The Gauchos let a few shots slip against the Pirates, falling 376-371.
Saddleback had been nearly flawless over the past month and had a chance to clinch at least a tie for the conference title against Orange Coast on Wednesday. The Pirates had other plans as Mike Squillace and Lyon Lazare both tied for medalist honors with 1-under-par, 71’s. For Lazare, the No. 5 player for the Pirates, it was three shots better than his best score of the season and over seven shots better than his scoring average for the year.
Chris Lungo led Saddleback with a 2-over-par 74 while Tyler Stubbs and Terry Ko both shot 75 for the day, a bit off of their season average. Brett Woolston and Cameron MacDonald both shot 76 to round out the Gaucho team.
Saddleback is now 12-1 in conference play and will play Irvine Valley College at Oak Creek Golf Course next Wednesday. First tee time is set for 1:00 PM.
4/8/11: Men’s golf still perfect in OEC
The men’s golf team had to dig deep on Wednesday and go low on the scorecard to defeat Santiago Canyon College. The Gauchos responded with a low score of the year (362) to move to 12-0 in conference play after a 362-366 win over the Hawks.
Saddleback was tested in a big way by a Santiago Canyon team that had upset on their minds at El Prado Golf Course. The Gauchos were up to the challenge, firing a team-total 2-over-par in beating the Hawks by four strokes. The top four players for Saddleback were -2 on the day, with both Tyler Stubbs and Chris Lungo shooting -1 (71). Terry Ko and Barron Fankhauser both shot even par (72) while Cameron MacDonald fired a 4-over-par round of 76 to round out the team.
Both Stubbs and Lungo finished in a tie for second place, as SCC ace Steven Givorand shot -2 to take home individual honors.
Saddleback is now 12-0 in Orange Empire Conference play headed into a showdown with Orange Coast College at Santa Ana Country Club next Wednesday. First tee time is set for 9:00 AM.
A win next Wednesday would clinch at least a tie for the Orange Empire Conference title for the Gauchos.

Stubbs has been the medalist in a number of events in the past month and Monday’s round of 71 on the par-71 course was one shot better than teammate Lungo and three shots better than teammates and fourth place finishers Terry Ko and Barron Fankhauser.
Saddleback’s team score of 367 was the top total of the season, bettering the score of 368 posted at Cottonwood Country Club on March 21. All six Gaucho players finished with scores in the 70’s as the team shot 12-over-par for the day.

Stubbs was a model of consistency, making three birdies and three bogeys in shooting even par, 72. He birdied the final hole of the day to finish second overall, while Terry Ko finished second on the team with a score of 75.

3/25/11: Men’s golf still undefeated after latest win
The Saddleback men’s golf team headed into the 2011 season looking bounce back from a disappointing 2010 season when they finished 18-12 and in seventh place in the conference. The Gauchos have been perfect thus far, improving to 9-0 on Wednesday after a 375-389 win over Riverside College.
Saddleback had tremendous scores throughout the lineup, as all five players finished between 74-76, with the sixth player in the lineup shooting 77. Tyler Stubbs and Terry Ko finished tied for medalist honors as both shot 2-over-par 74 on the par-72 Victoria Country Club. Barron Fankhauser started out of the gate quickly and was 2-under-par through five holes, but windy conditions got the best of him down the stretch as he finished one shot back at 75. Brett Woolston and Cameron MacDonald both shot 76 while Chris Longo finished at 77.
Saddleback is now 9-0 on the season and head coach Mike Rae says they are headed in the right direction.
“The guys seem to be gaining more confidence with every round,” Rae said. “The consistency at players one through six has been the key to our early success.”
