11/03/10: Gauchos finish second at conference finals
Saddleback posted team scores of 330 and 323 at the Orange Empire Conference finals held Monday and Wednesday at the Chino Creek course on the El Prado Golf Course, finishing second to Irvine Valley and advancing to the Southern California Regional Championship to be held Sunday and Monday, November 7-8, at the Alisal Guest Ranch course in Santa Ynez.
Grace Komoroczy fought off an illness to post a 36-hole score of 161 (83-78) as did Autumn Thomas (80-81). Hanna Stuart added a 165 (83-82) while Sam Godges finished with a 167 (84-83). Komoroczy finished second overall in the conference, earning first-team all-conference recognition. Godges and Stuart finished fifth and sixth, respectively, for their overall play in the conference and were awarded second-team all-conference honors.
Irvine Valley won the conference tournament with a team total of 620 (312-308), Saddleback had a 653 while Santa Ana was third at 733 (356-377).
10/21/10: Rain dampens Gauchos' hope of a golf title
Saddleback's Hanna Stuart (pictured) carded a 79 to share medalist honors on a wet and rainy day at the Oak Creek course in Irvine, but Saddleback still fell to Irvine Valley on the Lasers' home course. The setback puts Saddleback three victories behind their nearest nemesis to the north with three matches to be played.
Sam Godges added an 80 for the Gauchos and Grace Komoroczy followed with an 82 but Saddleback was edged out by Irvine Valley, 319 to 327, in the team scores. Santa Ana was back at 369 and Fullerton was unable to post a score. Irvine Valley had four players finish with a score of 80 or better on its home course.
Saddleback can still claim a share of the conference title by sweeping the remaining events. The Gauchos will host the conference competition at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club on Wednesday, October 27. Arroyo Trabuco is Saddleback's home course. Then, the Gauchos will compete in the Orange Empire Conference championship on November 1st and 3rd
at El Prado golf course. The conference championship is a 36-hole event and counts double on the team's conference record.
10/18/10: Gauchos fall by one stroke to Lasers
It's starting to get frustrating for Saddleback women's golf coach Gary Sabella, who saw his team fall to conference and district rival Irvine Valley College by one stroke in an Orange Empire Conference match on Monday at the San Clemente Municipal Golf Course.
Saddleback posted a team score of 338 and Irvine posted a 337, marking the fourth time in eight events that the Gauchos and Lasers have either been tied or within a stroke of each other. Saddleback's Grace Komoroczy paced the team with a 76 while Samantha Godges and Hannah Stuart both turned in 86s on the par-73 track.
The teams will battle again on Wednesday at Oak Creek, Irvine Valley's home course.
10/7/10: Women's golf wins by one stroke
Grace Komoroczy was the event medalist with a 6-over-par 79 as she led Saddleback to a 331 team score and a one stroke win over Irvine Valley College (332) on Wednesday on the Chino Creek track at the El Prado Golf Course.
Hanna Stuart (pictured) added an 82 with Samantha Godges carding an 84 and Brittney Lorack finishing with an 86. Santa Ana (379) finished way behind the leaders and Fullerton was not able to post a team score.
10/5/10: Women’s golf finishes second at OEC event
The Saddleback women’s golf team finished second on Monday at the OEC event held at Chino Creek Golf Course. The Gauchos finished eight strokes back of Irvine Valley as Grace Komoroczy (pictured) led Saddleback with a 79.
Komoroczy finished third overall at the event as Irvine ace Kaycee Fuller led the way with a score of 77. Samantha Godges fired an 81 for the Gauchos while Autumn Thomas finished at 82.
Saddleback shot a team score of 328, eight shots back of the Lasers on Monday. Santa Ana finished third at 366.
The Gauchos will play again at Chino Hills on Wednesday starting at 10:00 AM.
9/29/10: Golfers finish second to Irvine at Oak Creek
Saddleback played well but couldn't quite overtake Irvine Valley on the Lasers' home course during an Orange Empire Conference golf match played Monday at Oak Creek.
Samantha Godges (pictured) was the individual medalist with a 4-over-par 75, edging IVC's top player, Nicole Rivera, by a stroke and helping Saddleback to a team total of 326. Irvine Valley posted a 319 team total. Santa Ana (374) and Fullerton (no score) rounded out the field.
"I am very proud of how Sam has been playing and I feel confident that she will continue to be a strong golfer for the rest of the year," Gaucho coach Gary Sabella said. Godges has now carded back-to-back 75's in the last two matches and has a 79.7 scoring average. She only trails teammate Grace Komoroczy (76.3) and IVC's Rivera (78.3) as the top golfers in the conference.
The teams will be in action again on Monday, October 4, at the El Prado course.
9/23/10: Women’s golf back to its winning ways
After a couple straight tournaments of finishing second, the Saddleback women’s golf team got back to its winning ways with a 4-stroke win on Wednesday at Riverview Golf Course. Freshman Grace Komoroczy (pictured) was the tournament medalist to lead the way.
Komoroczy’s 4-over par 74 was one better than teammate Samantha Godges, as the Gauchos finished 1-2 for individual medalist honors. Saddleback finished four shots ahead of inter-district rival Irvine Valley College, firing a team total of 321. Santa Ana College finished third in the league match while Fullerton College finished fourth.
In five matches thus far during the season, Saddleback has finished no lower than third place in any event. The Gauchos will once again play a league match on Monday at Oak Creek Golf Club.
9/1/10: Women’s golf opens with a win at Santa Barbara
The Saddleback women’s golf team sent a statement to the rest of Southern California when they went to Santa Barbara for the 5th Annual South Coast Classic on opening weekend and won by 24 shots. The all-freshman lineup dominated the field as Grace Komoroczy (pictured) tied for medalist honors.
The Gauchos knew they could be pretty good in 2010 but when a team is comprised of all freshman, you never really know until you tee it up. Saddleback found out real quickly that they could indeed be a factor this season, when they led by 15 strokes after the first day of competition.
"It was a very encouraging start for our team," head coach Gary Sabella said. "Hopefully it is something we can build on."
Komoroczy (Laguna Beach HS) fired a two-day total of 147 to finish tied for medalist honors with Nicole Rivera of Irvine Valley College. Saddleback’s Autumn Thomas (Trabuco Hills HS) was not far behind, finishing third with a total of 163. Other Gauchos that finished in the top-20 included Johanna Stuart (San Clemente HS), Brittney Lorack (Tesoro HS) and Samantha Godges (Tesoro HS), who finished 11th, 17th and 18th respectively.
Saddleback will tee it up again on September 10-11 at the College of the Desert Tournament at Indian Canyons.
