10/19/11: Women’s golf second against rest of OEC field
The women’s golf team has been solidly grounded in second place in the Orange Empire Conference for the entire season, so it was no surprise when they finished in second place on Monday in and OEC event at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course. Hanna Stuart shot 81 in leading the Gauchos, which was good enough for third place overall at the tournament.
Saddleback faced off against the entire Orange Empire Conference on Monday, and it looked as if they would have a shot at knocking off first place Irvine Valley coming into the final group on the course. The Lasers held on however, as Sally Kim fired a 1-over par 74, thus giving IVC an 11-shot win over the Gauchos.
Saddleback was very consistent on Monday, as Stuart was followed closely by Erica Padilla (84), Stephanie Raymundo (85) and Kat Doppenberg (86) on the scoreboard. The Gauchos were 61 strokes better than the third place team, Fullerton College.
Saddleback will play again next Monday along with Santa Ana College and Cuyamaca College at the Sycuan Golf Resort in San Diego. The Gauchos are now 13-4 in Orange Empire Conference play for the season.
9/14: Gauchos get a pair of W's
The Saddleback women's golf team picked up a pair of victories on Wednesday after making its way with both Cuyamaca and Santa Ana on the Arroyo Trabuco golf course. The wins put Saddleback at the top of the conference standings with a 3-0 record.
Erica Padilla (left) shot an 80 to lead the Gauchos while Jazmin Grajales added an 82 and Stephanie Raymundo carded an 83. Saddleback's four-person team score of 332 easily outdistanced Orange Empire Conference newcomer, Cuyamaca, which posted a team score of 426. Santa Ana was not able to post a team score.
Saddleback's next several matches will be held away from Arroyo Trabuco as the conference schedule heats up.
9/13: Saddleback gets victory in conference-opener
The Orange Empire Conference schedule began this week and Saddleback got off on a good foot, posting a team score of 328 for a victory over Santa Ana. Jazmin Grajales led the Gauchos with a 78 while Stephanie Raymundo added an 81 and Hanna Stuart posted an 83.
Irvine Valley (300) also picked up a win in the match against Santa Ana, which didn't have enough players to post a team score. Saddleback will host Santa Ana and Cuyamaca on Wednesday (Sept. 14) at the Arroyo Trabuco golf course.
Over the weekend, Saddleback competed in the Desert Classic at the Indian Canyon Country Club courses in Palm Desert. Saddleback's team score of 662 was an improvement over the season-opening tournament and the Gauchos finished sixth in the 10-team event. Palomar won the event with a team score of 600 with Glendale finishing second at 607. Stuart led the Gauchos with identical rounds of 80 while Raymundo posted rounds of 84 and 82. Grajales came in with rounds of 85 and 82.
8/29: Gauchos open 2011 season at South Coast Invite
The Saddleback women's golf team opened the 2011 season on August 28-29 at the 36-hole South Coast Classic tournament. The team's two-day total of 672 placed the Gauchos 8th in the 10-team field and was not quite the start that head coach Gary Sabella was hoping for.
"We won this tournament last season but played below our ability this week," Sabella said.
Sophomore Hanna Stuart led the Gauchos with a 36-hole total of 163 (77-86) while Stephanie Raymundo added a 167 (82-85) and Kat Doppenberg posted a 168 (79-89). Stuart placed 20th overall out of 60 golfers.
Palomar captured the tournament with a score of 607. Saddleback's 672 was just four strokes behind Bakersfield College (668) in seventh place and far ahead of Mt. San Jacinto (717) and Citrus (884).
