PeelerThe Saddleback women’s swimming team evened its record at 2-2 in Orange Empire Conference competition with a 149-132 win over Fullerton College on Friday.  The Gauchos had eight individual wins in the pool as Whitney Werner, Hillary Ready and Dani Peeler all had multiple wins.

Saddleback won eight of 15 events behind Ready, who won in the 100 individual medley, 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke events.  Peeler won both the 200 free and 500 free while Werner captured the 100 free and 50 free.  Adrianna Hogan was also a winner for the Gauchos, winning the 200 individual medley race.

Saddleback will have the week off before hosting Santa Ana College and Riverside College on April 2.

WernerThe Saddleback swimming teams had a successful showing at Golden West College last Friday, splitting with the perennial power Rustlers in their own pool. The Gauchos had a number of fine individual performances, including six individual wins and two relay victories.

On the women’s side, Saddleback picked up a win in the 50 free by Whitney Werner in falling to Golden West, 201-60, in the team competition.  Werner dominated the event, swimming the distance in 26 seconds flat, 1.34 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. Werner would later finish second in the 100 free and was part of the 200 free relay team that won in the last event of the day.

The men’s team is starting to look like they will be a factor at the state meet this season as they beat Golden West, 112-102, scoring a win over a program that has won two state titles in the past nine seasons and finishing in the top-5 in the state in seven of the nine years.

The Gauchos men had five individual wins in the pool, including Brian Hopp, who won both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle races.  Hopp finished the 500 free in 5:01.53, nearly 12 seconds ahead of teammate Isaac Mendoza, who was in second.  His time of 10:30.01 in the 1,000 free was 1:03 better than the closest competitor

Mendoza picked up a win in the 200 free, beating the top Golden West competitor by nearly a second.  In addition to Hopp and Mendoza, Jordan Larson won the 50 free in a tight race, beating a trio of Rustler swimmers to the line in 23.62 seconds while Sean Wilson and Larson finished 1-2 in the 200 backstroke.

Saddleback also dominated in the 400 medley relay, beating the top Golden West team by more than 10 seconds.

Both men’s and women’s swimming will be back in the pool this Friday at Fullerton College.  Meet time is set for 2:00 PM.

Women's Swim 2010The Saddleback women’s swimming team put in a solid effort last Friday, beating Cypress before falling to perennial power Orange Coast in a dual meet at the Saddleback pool.  The Gauchos had a number of solid early-season efforts, led by a win in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Hillary Ready led a Saddleback team through the pool by dominating the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 35.93 seconds, over a second faster than the second place finisher as the Gauchos beat Cypress College 163-122 and fell to Orange Coast 211-74.

In addition to Ready’s performance in the 50-breast, she finished second in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke races.  Dani Peeler and Amanda Green also had solid individual performances, finishing second respectively in the 200-freestyle and 100-yard butterfly races.  The 200-yard medley relay team of Krista Mueller, Ready, Sarah Chamberlin and Whitney Werner finished third, less than a second off the pace of second place finisher Cypress.

Saddleback competes in the pool again this Friday at Golden West College at 2:00 PM.
