Nakieta Hein's exceptional run through the post-season came to an end in the quarterfinal round at the state championships in Fresno today as she fell to Grossmont's Sharon Reibstein in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Hein captured the first set before being edged out in the next two sets of the hard-fought match which lasted nearly three hours.

Hein and Jeanette Losaria are still alive in doubles play, reaching the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lien Huynh and B Schmitgen of Cosumnes River College. Hein and Losaria -- seeded No. 4 in Southern California -- will now face the tandem of Betsy Sauer and Nicci Yvanovich of Santa Barbara City College. Sauer and Yvanovich were seeded No. 8 in Southern California and upset the top-seeded team from Northern California, Reedley College's Alex McDonald and Nicole Simoni, in the opening round 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.

heinSaddleback's Nakieta Hein won her first singles match at the CCCAA individual state tennis championships in Fresno on Friday morning, defeating Anastasia Glyantseva of DeAnze College, 6-4, 6-0. She will now face Sharon Reibstein of Grossmont College in the singles quarterfinals later today. It will be the third consecutive weekend that Hein and Reibstein have squared off.

Hein, who played in the No. 4 singles slot for Saddleback this season, has met up against Reibstein in the semifinals of the Ojai Tournament two weeks ago and in the quarterfinals of the Southern California Regional tournament last weekend. Reibstein, who is the No. 1 player for Grossmont, won last weekend's regional matchup by a 6-2, 6-2 score, evening the series after Hein won the Ojai matchup by a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 count. Today's match will prove to be the rubber match and will be the last time these two face off this year.

Hein will also team up with Jeanette Losaria in a first-round doubles match this afternoon and will face Lien Huynh and B Schmitgen of Cosumnes River College.

jamosSaddleback women's tennis coach Jay Amos was selected by his peers as the Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year for 2011 after leading the Gauchos to a perfect 10-0 conference record.

Amos, who is in his 11th year of coaching with the Gauchos, has won seven conference titles, including his third consecutive title in 2011. It is the first time in school history that the women's tennis program has won three consecutive titles. It is also the eighth time in Amos' 11 years that Saddleback qualified for post-season play. He is now 143-35 overall and 94-16 in conference matches.

Also earning all-conference recognition were Avriel Tomaiko, Karley Pletcher, and Nakeita Hein in singles play along with the doubles teams of Tomaiko/Pletcher and Emma Sheehan/Hein.

avrielThe Saddleback women's tennis team won't repeat as state champions in 2011, thanks in part to a pesky Palomar Comet tennis team that appeared relaxed and undaunted by the defending state champs. The match went the distance with Palomar posting a tight 5-4 victory.

Saddleback was hoping to hold a 4-2 lead after the six singles matches were played. But Palomar swept the top three slots while Saddleback captured the bottom three singles matches to split the points and head into doubles play tied at 3-3.

Saddleback's No. 3 doubles team of Keyt O'Neil and Lauren Fetter won quickly and easily to give the Gauchos a 4-3 advantage, but Saddleback's No. 1 team of Avriel Tomaiko and Karley Pletcher fell by a 7-5, 7-6 score in a second-set tiebreaker. That meant the match would come down to No. 2 doubles.

Because Jeanette Losaria was injured last week, Emma Sheehan was asked to play doubles for just the second time this season and teamed with Nakieta Hein (pictured right). The Gaucho duo lost the first set but bounced back to win the second set to force a third and decisive set. The two teams battled to 5-5 before Palomar was able to break Sheehan's serve and then held serve for a 7-5 win to clinch the match and send Palomar to the regional semifinals next Tuesday.

Saddleback entered the match seeded No. 2 in the playoffs while Palomar was seeded No. 7. The Gauchos end the season with a 13-2 overall record.

tomaikoThe Saddleback women’s tennis team saw its 31-match winning streak snapped last week, and with it lost out on the No. 1 seed in Southern California for the upcoming playoffs.  The Gauchos instead earned the No. 2 seed, and will host Palomar College on Tuesday.

Saddleback opened the 2011 season with a 7-2 win over Palomar and will look to duplicate that effort when they open the playoffs on Tuesday at the Saddleback tennis courts.  The Gauchos are also looking to defend their state championship from a year ago and bounce back from a loss against No. 1 seed Santa Monica College a week ago.

Saddleback earned the No. 2 seed for the playoffs and if victorious on Tuesday, would face the winner of Santa Barbara City College and Grossmont College a week from Tuesday in the Southern California semifinals.

In addition to the team schedule for the playoffs, Avriel Tomaiko, Karley Pletcher and Nakieta Hein all qualified for the individual regional tournament, which will take place on March 5-7.  The doubles teams of Tomaiko/Pletcher and Hein/Emma Sheehan also qualified for the event.

Souther California Playoff Seeds
(1) Santa Monica (13-1)
(2) Saddleback (13-1)
(3) Grossmont (16-2)
(4) Mt. SAC (15-1)
(5) Riverside (12-4)
(6) Santa Barbara (10-3)
(7) Palomar (16-4)
(8) Rio Hondo (9-5)
* Riverside College was actually seeded No. 6 for the playoffs and Santa Barbara No. 5, but due to a potential inter-conference matchup between Saddleback and Riverside in round two, the seeds were swapped to avoid the potential match.

heinThe two best programs in women’s tennis the past two seasons have been Saddleback and Santa Monica and on Tuesday the two teams met for a late-season, non-conference matchup before the playoffs.  Saddleback saw its 31-match winning streak come to an end as the Corsairs defeated the Gauchos, 7-2.

Every match had drama and was tightly contested but Saddleback was unable to turn back a Santa Monica team that came into the match undefeated against community college teams.  The Gauchos were hampered in the middle of singles action when No. 3 singles player Jeanette Losaria was forced to retire due to injury with the match tied at one set apiece.

The lone winners on the day were Nakieta Hein at No. 4 singles and Keyt O’Neil at No. 6 singles, who were both forced to go three sets in their respective wins.

Saddleback will play in the Orange Empire Conference individual tournament, which starts today at Cypress College.    The Gauchos will start team playoffs next Tuesday.

The 31-match winning streak that started at the beginning of the 2010 season was tied for the third longest winning streak in Saddleback athletics history with women's basketball, trailing just men’s basketball (34) and men’s golf (56).

losariaThe Saddleback women’s tennis team picked up its 31st straight win on Friday with a 6-3 win over Grossmont College.  The Gauchos turned back a Griffin team that was previously unbeaten against community college programs in 2011.

Saddleback dropped the first two matches of the day but ripped off five straight wins in defeating a Grossmont team that had only lost one match of the year to Pt. Loma Nazarene, a NAIA 4-year program.  Jeanette Losaria started the Gaucho roll by hammering her opponent, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles before Lauren Fetter and Emma Sheehan both gritted out 3-set wins to give Saddleback a 3-2 lead.  Keyt O’Neil then won at No. 6 singles before Avriel Tomaiko and Karley Pletcher teamed up at No. 1 double for an 8-6 win after both losing singles matches earlier in the afternoon.

With the win, Saddleback won its 31st straight match dating back to the beginning of the 2010 season.  The 31 straight wins ties women’s basketball for the third longest winning streak in Saddleback athletics history, trailing just men’s basketball (34) and men’s golf (56).

The Gauchos will now face Santa Monica College in another key non-conference battle next Tuesday.  The Gauchos and Corsairs battled for the Southern California championship in 2010, with Saddleback winning 5-4 and advancing to the state title match.

tomaikoThe Saddleback women’s tennis team won its 30th straight match on Tuesday with a dominating 8-1 win over Riverside College.  The Gaucho program is now tied for the fourth longest winning streak in Saddleback athletics history.

Saddleback was dominant in singles play, winning all six matches in finishing the Orange Empire Conference schedule a perfect 10-0 for the second straight season.  They then won the first two doubles matches before dropping a match at No. 3 doubles.

losariaAvriel Tomaiko won a hard-fought battle at No. 1 singles, going three sets before winning the third set 7-6 over Brooke Vorhees.  She then teamed with Karley Petcher for an 8-3 win in No. 1 doubles.   Saddleback was dominant the rest of the way in singles play, losing just two sets.  The Gauchos won 98-of-145 games at singles before winning 19-of-32 in doubles play over a Tiger team that finished tied for second place in the conference.  The most dominant play of the day may have been Jeanette Losario, who swept past Natalie Tomlin 6-0, 6-0 before teaming with Nakieta Hein for an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles.

With the win, Saddleback won its 30th straight match dating back to the beginning of the 2010 season.  The 30 straight wins ties men’s tennis for the fourth longest winning streak in Saddleback athletics history, trailing just women’s basketball (31), men’s basketball (34) and men’s golf (56).

The Gauchos will have the rest of the week off before facing Santa Monica College in a key non-conference battle next Tuesday.  The Gauchos and Corsairs battled for the Southern California championship in 2010, with Saddleback winning 5-4 and advancing to the state title match.

oneilfetterThe Saddleback women’s tennis team took its first step towards its ultimate goal of winning a second state title on Thursday when it defeated inter-district rival Irvine Valley College, 5-4.  With the win, the Gauchos captured the Orange Empire Conference championship with one remaining conference match left on the schedule.

Saddleback was pushed to the limit by the Lasers and needed to go to the No. 3 doubles match to earn the win.  Keyt O’Neil and Lauren Fetter pulled out the 8-3 win for the Gauchos and to keep the perfect season intact.  O’Neil was the only two-time winner on the day, also dominating her No. 6 singles match, 6-0, 6-4.

Saddleback will finish conference play next Tuesday at Riverside College before a critical non-conference match against Santa Monica College the following Tuesday.  Both Saddleback and Santa Monica are undefeated against community college programs with the lone loss for the Corsairs on the season coming against Cal State Los Angeles.  The Gauchos and Santa Monica met in the Southern California finals a year ago with Saddleback winning a tight match, 5-4, to advance to the state title match.

With the win, the Gaucho program has now won 29 straight team matches dating back to the beginning of the 2010 season. The 29 consecutive wins is the fifth longest streak in Saddleback College athletics history next to men’s tennis (30), women’s basketball (31), men's basketball (34), and men’s golf (56).

sheehanThe Saddleback women’s tennis team defeated Cypress College, 7-2, on Tuesday to improve to 10-0 on the season and 8-0 in Orange Empire Conference play.  The Gauchos could clinch the OEC title with a win over inter-district rival Irvine Valley College on Thursday.

Saddleback made quick work of Cypress, winning five of six individual matches to win the team match before it ever went to doubles.  After falling in the opening match at No. 1 singles, the Gauchos never lost a set, winning 48-of-54 games in the final four singles matches of the day.  No. 3 Jeanette Losaria, No. 4 Nakieta Hein and No. 5 Emma Sheehan all scored 6-0, 6-1 wins in their respective matches as Saddleback had too much depth in the lineup for the Chargers.

Losaria and Hein then combined for an 8-1 win at doubles, joining Keyt O’Neil as two-time winners on the day.  O’Neil won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles before combining with Lauren Fetter for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

Saddleback will now face Irvine Valley on Thursday at home in a match that could give the Gauchos the outright Orange Empire Conference title.  Saddleback narrowly defeated IVC on March 10, 5-4, and the Lasers will be looking to end a Gaucho winning streak of 28 straight matches.  The 28 consecutive wins is the fifth longest streak in Saddleback College athletics history next to men’s tennis (30), women’s basketball (31), men's basketball (34), and men’s golf (56).

Saddleback fell behind 1-0 before Karley Pletcher persevered with a 3-set win over Lianne Wheelock at No. 2 singles to even the team match at 1-1. The Gauchos then dominated the next four singles matches, winning 48-of-56 games in closing out the team match before it ever hit doubles play.  Pletcher then teamed with Avriel Tomaiko in shutting out the Pirates’ No. 1 doubles team, 8-0.

Saddleback has now won 27 straight matches and their last loss was on the final day of the 2009 season.  It is the fifth longest streak in Saddleback College athletics history next to men’s tennis (30), women’s basketball (31), men's basketball (34), and men’s golf (56).

After dropping two of the first three matches in singles play, Saddleback ripped off six straight wins in turning back a Hornet team that had early visions of pulling of the upset.  The Gauchos won 36-of-42 games during the final singles matches, including a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win by Nakieta Hein over Jessie Wackerman at No. 3.   Nearly as impressive was the 6-0, 6-1 win by Emma Sheehan over Sophia Sargsyan at No. 4 singles.

Saddleback has now won 26 straight matches and their last loss was on the final day of the 2009 season.  It is the fifth longest streak in Saddleback College athletics history next to men’s tennis (30), women’s basketball (31), men's basketball (34), and men’s golf (56).

losariaThe Saddleback women’s tennis team has not been tested much in the past two seasons but knew it needed to play its best tennis of the season against Irvine Valley College on Thursday if it was going to continue a winning streak that started at the beginning of the 2010 season.  The Gauchos got off to a tough start, but responded with great depth in the roster in defeating the Lasers 5-4 to remain undefeated.

Saddleback hasn’t been behind in many matches over the past 1.5 years but fell behind early 2-0 to Irvine Valley, a program that appears to be on the rise.  The Gauchos, however, showed tenacity by winning the next four singles matches in taking a 4-2 heading into doubles play.  After falling at No. 1 doubles, Saddleback finished off the Lasers when Jeanette Losaria and Nakieta Hein defeated Katie Billings and Megan Miller 8-5, extending the winning streak to 25 matches.

With the win, Saddleback now stands at 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in Orange Empire Conference play.  Irvine Valley entered the match at a perfect 4-0 but fell to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the loss.

The Gauchos will have the week off for spring break before taking the courts again at Fullerton College on March 22.  Match time is set for 2:00 PM.

heinThe Saddleback women’s tennis team remained undefeated on Tuesday with a dominating 9-0 win over Cypress College in Cypress.  The Gaucho program has now won 24 straight team matches dating back to the close of the 2009 season.

Saddleback was in control throughout the match, winning 75-of-107 games at singles before dominating the Chargers in doubles play by a count of 24-7.  The most impressive performance may have been turned in by No. 4 singles player Nakieta Hein, who shut out Nicole El-Ali 6-0, 6-0 before teaming up with Jeanette Losaria for an 8-2 win in doubles play.

Saddleback has now won 24 straight matches and their last loss was on the final day of the 2009 season.  It is the fifth longest streak in Saddleback College athletics history next to men’s tennis (30), women’s basketball (31), men's basketball (34), and men’s golf (56).

tomaikoThe Saddleback women’s tennis team won its 23rd straight match on Thursday when it defeated Orange Coast College, 8-1, on the Saddleback courts.  The Gauchos once again displayed tremendous depth throughout the lineup in beating the Pirates and improving to 5-0 on the season.

Saddleback only lost one match at No. 2 doubles and received very little resistance from an Orange Coast program that over the years has been one of the best in the Orange Empire Conference.  Avriel Tomaiko got the Gauchos off to a good start by defeating Anna Walinowicz 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles before teaming with Karley Pletcher at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 win.

Dominating performances were turned in by Jeanette Losaria and Nakieta Hein at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, as the tandem dropped just four games in four sets.  The two later teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Saddleback has now won 23 straight matches and their last loss was on the final day of the 2009 season.  It is the fifth longest streak in Saddleback College athletics history next to men’s tennis (30), women’s basketball (31), men's basketball (34), and men’s golf (56).

heinThe Saddleback women’s tennis team hasn’t lost a match since the end of the 2009 season and despite a slow start on Tuesday never came close to ending that streak.  The Gauchos won their 22nd straight match with a 7-2 win over Fullerton, improving to 4-0 on the season.

After Avriel Tomaiko fell to Tiffani Shaik at No. 1 singles, Karley Pletcher had to go three sets at No. 2 singles before Saddleback let the horses out of the barn.  From there on out, the Gauchos won 48-of-53 games at singles, closing out the team match before it ever reached the doubles matches.  Saddleback would win 2-of-3 doubles matches as all seven players on the roster would contribute in the team win.  Jeanette Losaria, Nakieta Hein and Kate O’Neill would all win at both singles and doubles, with O’Neill joining Lauren Fetter for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Saddleback will be back on the court this Thursday at home against Orange Coast College.  Match time is scheduled for 2:00 PM.

losariaThe Saddleback women’s tennis team was victorious over Riverside College on Thursday in its first Orange Empire Conference match of the season, beating the Tigers, 7-2.  It was the 21st straight victory for the program that captured the 2010 state title.

The Gauchos once again displayed the kind of depth that was a big part of their title run a season ago, falling at No. 1 singles before reeling of four wins in the next five matches to take a 4-2 lead headed into doubles play.

Jeanette Losaria had a big day for Saddleback, shutting out Brittany Gourlay 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles before pairing with Nakieta Hein for a dominating 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles play.

Riverside entered the match at 5-1 overall and was expected to be the toughest test for Saddleback so far on the season.  The Gauchos managed to beat the Tigers 72-57 in singles games before hammering Riverside in doubles, 24-10.

“It was a good win for our team,” head coach Jay Amos said.  “Riverside has some good talent and our ladies were up to the challenge.”

The Gauchos improved to 3-0 on the season and will play again next Tuesday at home against Fullerton College.

pletcherThe Saddleback women’s tennis team is off to a quick start out of the gate, looking much like the 2010 team that captured the state title.  The latest win was a dominating 9-0 win over Long Beach City College on Thursday.

Saddleback won its 20th straight match on Thursday at LBCC, a streak that started at the beginning of the 2010 season and has barely been tested along the way.  The Gauchos overwhelmed the Vikings, winning 96-of-102 games in improving to 2-0 on the season.

Karley Pletcher started out with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles before the Gauchos ripped off 60 straight games in the other five singles matches.  Pletcher then teamed with Avriel Tomaiko in doubles for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles for Saddleback in what looks like will be the final tune-up before heading into Orange Empire Conference play against Riverside College next Thursday.  The Gauchos were scheduled to play in Ventura this weekend but rain is likely to postpone the event for the unforeseeable future.

pletcherThe Saddleback women’s tennis team has high expectations after winning the state title in 2010, but with only two starters returning, had a lot of questions to answer heading into 2011.  The opening match answered a few of those questions as the Gauchos cruised to a 7-2 win at Palomar in the season-opener on Thursday.

With sophomores Avriel Tomaiko and Karley Pletcher (pictured) the only two players back from last season’s title team, Saddleback turned to a solid group of freshman and they responded nicely in defeating Palomar to open the season.  After Tomaiko dropped the opening match at No. 1 singles, the young Gauchos won four of the next five singles matches, and swept the Comets in doubles play.  Pletcher got things started for Saddleback when she defeated Tori Bohart at No. 2 doubles, with Bohart retiring due to an injury and Pletcher leading comfortably in the third set.

Saddleback’s freshmen contingent finished 5-1 on the day, going 2-0 in doubles play as the Gauchos once again displayed great depth, something that was a hallmark of the 2010 team.  Jeanette Losaria and Kate O’Neil both went 2-0 in their inaugural college debut, winning in both singles and doubles.

Saddleback will have nearly two weeks off before playing again on February 15 at home against Santa Monica, the program they defeated in the Southern California finals a year ago.
