9/28/11: Lady Gauchos sunk by Pirates

Saddleback head coach Jennifer Higginson was surprised by the birthday cake that her players presented to her after the Orange Empire Conference battle against Orange Coast. Had they presented it to her before the game, it would have been easy to figure out what the coach would have wished for before she blew out the candles.

Saddleback dropped a 15-3 decision to the Pirates at home on Wednesday afternoon. Rachel Novelli scored two first-half goals for the Gauchos on lob shots but Saddleback just couldn't capitalize on any Pirate mistakes and had trouble getting many shots off before the shot clock expired.

The Gauchos return to conference action next Wednesday, October 5, at Golden West College.

9/9/11: Gauchos drop two in own tournament

The Saddleback women's water polo team opened the 2011 schedule by hosting its own tournament over the weekend.

The Gauchos (0-2) were kind hosts, falling to Chaffey College 12-8 in the opening game and then adding a 7-6 setback in overtime at the hands of Mt. San Antonio College. Jasmine Hall and Ana Augustson had three goals apiece in the opening game loss. Hall added four goals in the overtime loss, including two in the second overtime period to tie the score at 6-6 after Saddleback trailed 6-4 in the first overtime period. But Mt. San Antonio's Cambria Wright scored the eventual winning goal with just :37 remaining in the second overtime.

Saddleback will face Palomar on Saturday at 9:10 a.m. and then conclude the tournament by hosting Southwestern College at 12:40 p.m.
