TRACK NEWS: GAUCHOS WIN NON-CONFERENCE DUAL MEET

The Saddleback College men’s and women’s teams swept visiting Antelope Valley College in a non-conference dual meet on Friday (April 4) in the Saddleback stadium.
Saddleback freshman distance runner Ines Flores won the 800-meters, 1500-meters, and 3,000-meter events while freshman Sue Rodriguez won the 100-meter, 400-meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump to lead the Gauchos to a 58-33 victory. The throws were not contested.
On the men’s side, Saddleback defeated the Marauders 73-36 as no Gaucho athlete doubled, but eight different athletes won their events and the depth of the team accounted for the larger margin of victory. Daivon Dumas won the 100-meter dash (11.12 seconds) and Brandon Howard won the 400-meter dash (48.87 seconds) while Victor Sanchez won the 110-meter high hurdles (15.55 seconds) and Edgar Michel won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (58.09).

SADDLEBACK TRACK OPENS SEASON WITH NON-CONFERENCE TRI-MEET

The Saddleback College track and field teams opened the regular season with a non-conference tri-meet against Orange Coast and Cerritos colleges.

Sophomore Ebony Kirby won the women’s 100-meter dash (13.52 seconds) and placed third in the 200-meters (27.90) while freshman Rachel Tears won the pole vault (9’ 6”) and Ines Flores finished second in the 1500-meter run (5:08.79). The Gauchos are not nearly as deep as Cerritos, allowing the Falcons to earn points in every event except for the 400-meters. Cerritos finished with 11 points while Orange Coast posted 65 points and Saddleback finished with 20 points.

On the men’s side, Bobby Stangl won the 1500-meters (4:13.41) and finished second in the 800-meters (2:03.97) while Matt Van Dyke added a second place finish in the 5,000-meters (16:21.95) and a third place in the 1500-meters (4:20.54). Saddleback freshman Victor Sanchez won the 110-high hurdles (15.83) as well as the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (57.75) and Griffin Simmons captured the men’s pole vault (14’ 0”).

Danny Warner placed second in the long jump (21’ 0”) while Anthony Cabrera placed third in the long jump (20’ 8.5”) and second in the triple jump (43’ 0.5”).

Cerritos won the men’s meet with 92 points while Orange Coast (57) edged out Saddleback (53) for second place. Saddleback will compete at the Cerritos Invitational next weekend, Feb. 22-23.
