Instructions for using the Course Search on ASSIST

During the spring 2008 term the UC Office of the President and CSU Chancellor’s office, in consultation with California Community Colleges, approved new policies for IGETC certification. One key change was that community colleges may now approve courses for IGETC from non-certifying institutions that match an IGETC approved course at any California Community College. The previous policy only allowed community colleges to pass-along courses from non-certifying colleges and universities if there was a matching course on the IGETC pattern of the community college processing the final certification. The following set of instructions explains how to search for matching courses on IGETC patterns at any California Community College.

1.      Click here: http://www2.assist.org/maint/login.jsp (Linked on Counselor Homepage)

2.      USername: saddlbkfac

Password: redviolet

3.      Click on Course Search on sidebar at left of screen

4.      Select All Community College Campuses in Institutions Box

5.      Type in key words from title of the course to which you are seeking a match in “Search in Course Title” box

a.      Attempt to try plural or singular versions of terms, or related terms if your initial search is unsuccessful

6.      Under “IGETC Areas” select “Courses With Any IGETC Qualification”

7.      If your search is successful you will find the IGETC Areas for which the course has been approved under the link entitle “curric” on the right of your screen. You can find the course description under the “OSCAR PDF” link on the right of your screen. If there is no pdf link, you may need to search for a course description using college source or have the student bring you a course description.

8.      If your search is unsuccessful, you may try inputting key words from the course title or course description in the box which states “Key words in OSCAR outline information.” This search will take longer, but will review all course outlines approved for IGETC in the state of California.
