Cooperative Work Experience
Education
Welcome to Saddleback College's Cooperative Work Experience Education Program.
This student workbook
has been prepared to provide you with all the pertinent information and forms
necessary to meet the course requirements.
Students please note that instructors will notify employers if a student drops the CWE class.
Course
Requirements
The following is an
outline of what is required of each member on the Student-Employer-College team. Student
Responsibilities:

Students must identify
their learning objectives and discuss them with their Job Supervisor. The
job supervisor must sign the objective form to show agreement with the objectives.
Your instructor will assist you with writing the three objectives during the
first class session. The objectives are your record of the semester's plan
for educational growth and are the basis for evaluation and awarding of credit.

Students must meet
with the college instructor assigned to their course for approval of the objectives
and to secure the instructor's signature on the Goal/Objectives form. Objectives
will be due the 5th week of the semester.

Students should attend
the final meeting, at the end of the semester, when the instructor and supervisor meet to discuss and evaluate the student's work.

Submitting all
completed paperwork to the instructor by the date requested. These forms must be completed and returned
to the instructor before a grade can be issued or credit awarded. If the required paperwork is not completed and returned to the instructor before the end of the semester a grade of "F" will result.

e-dress and/or telephone number changes
IMPORTANT: Please present
the enclosed letter to your job supervisor as soon as possible along with your
objectives so that he/she may be advised of your participation in the Cooperative
Work Experience Education Program.
Instructor
Responsibilities:

Assist the student
in writing THREE clearly defined learning objectives and complete related
paperwork during the first class session.

Visit each student's
job-site twice during the semester (the first visit may be a phone call) to
discuss and finalize the learning objectives with the employer and to evaluate
the performance and objectives at the semester's end.
Meet with the student
near the end of the semester to evaluate his/her objectives.
- Notify employers if a CWE student drops the class at any time during the semester.
Employer/Supervisor
Responsibilities:

Assist student
in setting objectives that can be accomplished on-the-job during the 16- week
semester.

Evaluate how well
students attain the objectives at the end of the semester, as the course grade
will reflect this evaluation.

Cooperate with
the assigned college instructor in determining appointments for the two job-site
visitations with the instructor in order to discuss the student's job-oriented
learning objectives and the evaluation of those objectives.
Student's
Job Attendance:
-
A timesheet will
be submitted showing weekly hours worked verified by the employer's signature.

Units are based
on total hours worked during the semester:
Paid Employment-
75 hours = 1 unit
150 hours = 2 units
225 hours = 3 units
(maximum for general students)
300 hours = 4 units
(maximum for vocational/career co-op students) Unpaid/Volunteer Employment-
60 hours = 1 unit
120 hours = 2 units
180 hours = 3 units
(maximum for general students)
240 hours = 4 units
(maximum for vocational/career co-op students)

Twelve weeks with
one employer (or equivalent approved by your instructor) must be completed.
Student's
Class Attendance:
-
Each student must
meet with the instructor at least twice during the semester (once in the beginning and once at the end of the semester).
Important
Student Load Requirements:
Students must enroll in the CWE 180 class that corresponds to their program major. Students do not need to be enrolled in any other course to enroll in the CWE 180 unless otherwise noted in their specific program requirements.
