The mission of the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute is to promote lifelong learning by providing academically rigorous, mentally stimulating, socially engaging, and health improving courses for older adults throughout South Orange County.


Since 1976, the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute has served as the leader within California as the State's largest, non-credit, older adult education program serving nearly 6,000 students throughout South Orange County. We welcome all older adults to join our tuition-free, lifelong learning courses.

Who is the Emeritus Institute program for?

The average age of our students is 73, however, any individual over eighteen is welcome to join the Emeritus Institute. 

How much do Emeritus Institute courses cost?

All Emeritus Institute courses are tuition free, non-credit courses. Only a few art courses require a material fee, typically between $5-15 per class, per semester.

How long are classes? 

Emeritus Institute courses follow the South Orange County Community College District Academic Calendar. Our courses are 16 weeks long in the Fall and Spring semesters, and we offer an 8 week Summer Session. Courses typically meet one, two, or three days a week for a total of two-to-three hours a week.

How many classes can you take?

Students can take as many courses as they would like. Many students take three or four classes during a week.

Can I transfer these courses to other colleges?

Emeritus Institute courses are non-credit courses and are non-transferable.

We offer courses at over 30 different locations throughout South Orange County and in particular in the following cities:

How to Apply

  1. To complete a physical application, download and print the Emeritus Institute application.
  2. Scan and email the signed application to scadmissions@saddleback.edu (recommended)
  3. Mail in the application to the address on the bottom of the application.
  4. Return the application to the Admissions and Records Office at Saddleback College or to the
    Clubhouse 4 Emeritus Institute Office within Laguna Woods Village.
