George W. Cronyn, ed.
American Indian Poetry: an Anthology of Songs and Chants
New York: Fawcett Columbine, 1991.
This represents a collection of songs and chants of major
American Indian tribes. First published in 1919, it addresses a
myriad of subjects from the mundane to the mystical. We read, in
the new forward, Kenneth Lincoln's poignant thoughts on the
difficulties in translating the songs from the original language.
Lincoln comments on the place that songs, chants and dances held
in Indian life and highlights the profound influence that American
Indian culture had on European and American writers and composers.
