Ward Churchill
Fantasies of the Master Race: Literature, Cinema and the
Colonization of American Indians
Monroe, ME: Common Courage Press, 1992.
This blistering critique of historical, literary and cinematic
portrayals of American Indians is most thought provoking, if not
without error. Regarding Kevin Costner's production Dances
With Wolves, Churchill states on page 244, "...he (Costner)
invariably cast Indians to fill his script's Indian roles, a
Hollywood first." Hollywood historically has used Indians to
portray themselves, albeit rarely in a lead role. This error
notwithstanding, Churchill rightfully takes Euro-America to task
for centuries of prejudice and stereotyping.
