John Fire (Lame Deer) and Richard Erdoes
Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions: The Life of a Sioux Medicine Man
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1972.

A quest for deeper meaning and spirituality was at the heart of the resurgent interest in the American Indian in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Erdoes' own quest led him to Lame Deer, whose spiritual life he recounts in this work. The recounding is an "as told to" and begs the question: just what is lost (or gained) in translation, and just how much of that translation is the translator's own cultural interpretation?
