Richard Drinnon
Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire-Building
Norman, OK: University of Oklahoma Press, 1997.
Drinnon successfully characterizes American expansion westward by
the repression of "savages" and racism against non-whites. He
follows a comprehensive and scholarly course from the landing at
Plymouth, through the arrogance that bespoke Manifest Destiny,
through the journey overseas to Korea and Vietnam. It is with the
failed attempt at European/American domination in Vietnam that
Drinnon sees the opportunity to call a halt to the rapacious,
exploitive mindset.
