COURSE DESCRIPTION
An introduction to descriptive and explanatory study of psychoses, functional disorders, personality disorders, and other abnormal patterns.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. List and describe the five axes of diagnosis used in DSM-IV-TR (or the most current edition of this diagnostic manual).
2. Compare and contrast biological, psychological, family and social views of the causes and methods of treatment of abnormal behaviors.
3. Identify and compare major scientific methods for gathering and analyzing information for explaining behavior.
4. List and/or recognize the characteristics of specific anxiety, somatoform, mood, eating, sleep, sexual-identity, substance abuse, personality, schizophrenic and cognitive disorders.
5. Identify the differences between organic and functional disorders.
6. Recognize unethical therapeutic practices according to American Psychological Association guidelines.

A scantron Answer Sheet and a lead pencil are required for each test.
There are no make-up tests scheduled for missed quizzes.
All tests are Multiple Choice.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Cheating of any sort will not be tolerated. Any student who is caught cheating will receive a zero on that assignment of exam. Cheating includes, but is not limited to:
· Looking at another student's paper during an exam
· Using any notes/electronic devices not approved by me during an exam
· Talking to another student about test material during an exam
· Plagiarism - Using someone else's words or ideas, and presenting them as your own
OUTSIDE ASSIGNMENT
Complete the questions and the vignette's for each chapter in the casebook. Turn in the completed vignette's from 4 chapters at the final.
The outside assignment will be graded on a pass/fail basis and failure to complete the assignment will lower your final grade.
ATTENDANCE
If you miss more than 6 hours of lecture you can be dropped from the class. If you are late to class it is your responsibility to see the instructor about the roll sheet.
