Gardening with Young Children



Catalog Course Description
Basic skills and strategies for developing and maintaining gardens with young children, including garden site development, plant selection, developmentally appropriate activities for children, ideas for funding and maintaining school gardens, and tips for working with volunteer helpers.


Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, each student will be able to:
1.Design and choose appropriate plants and materials for a garden and materials for a garden suitable for use with young children.
2.Locate and choose appropriate sources for garden supplies and funding.
3.Plan for garden maintenance.
4.Develop appropriate gardening activities to use with young children.
5.Demonstrate knowledge of strategies for working with parent and other volunteers in the development and maintenance of a children’s garden area.


Methods of Evaluation
1.Participation in the development of a school garden site during scheduled lab hours.
2.Development of a written plan for a children’s garden addressing each component specified by the instructor.
3.Ability to write developmentally appropriate gardening curriculum and activities for young children.
4.Creation of a volunteer job description sheet, including a sample monthly schedule of needs for volunteers to participate in the ongoing maintenance of a garden.
