SYLLABUS

 

Course Description

United States History is a survey of American History and interpretation of institutions from the colonial period to the present.

 

Course Objectives

Ability to make connections between the past and the present

Gain a clear understanding of the effects of exploration and colonization

Analyze the causes and significance of the American Revolution and democracy

Analyze the differences in the development of the economies of the North and South

Understand the significance of westward expansion to the nation

Analyze the causes and significance of the Civil War

Know how America transitions to an industrial country in the late nineteenth century

Learn why the United States becomes an imperialist nation

Understand the modernization of the United States in the twentieth century

Learn how to read, write and think critically about United States History

Observe how people and events created the country we live in today

 

 

 

 

 

 

Student Learning Outcomes

In order to assist in accomplishing the above objectives, students will being reading and analyzing a variety of primary source documents from all periods in United States History. These assignments will help students gain a greater understanding of events from historical eras. Students will be responsible for reading, answering questions, and being prepared to discuss their responses on the online discussion board, ask critical thinking questions, and put this document in perspective for the time period being studied.

Assessment will take place in the form of submitting homework responses online. These will assist in the ability of students to be able to read and analyze, and then write a response to selected documents which will be part of the tests.

 

 

 

 

SCHEDULE

 

Specific information on what will be covered in each class can be found on Blackboard. The following information lists the weeks and topics which will be divided into sixteen weeks. Reading the textbook is an essential part of this class. Outlines for all chapters will be on Blackboard under External Links for the textbook   Give Me Liberty. Work for this class can be estimated at approximately 18 hours per week. Refer to the student handbook.

 

CHECK YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT ON BLACKBOARD FOR ALL THE CLASSES. ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON MONDAY MORNING AT 8 A.M. AND THEY WILL CLOSE THE FOLLOWING SUNDAY AT MIDNIGHT. IN ADDITION TO THE TEXT BOOK ASSIGNMENTS, VIDEOS AND DOCUMENT READINGS WILL BE ADDED DURING CERTAIN WEEKS OF THE CLASS AS PART OF THE HOMEWORK.
