History

The Saddleback Forensics Team has a history that goes back to the 1970s.  Recently retired, Carolann Messner and current Irvine Valley College instructor, Craig Grossman coached the team to the District's first National Championship in 1982. During this period Irvine Valley College was called “Saddleback North” and Saddleback Community College was called "Saddleback South."  In 1983, Carolann began to serve in administration and Bob Borneman was hired. In 1987, Paul Crary was hired. Together Craig Grossman, Bob Borneman, and Paul Crary pioneered a nationally recognized Speech & Team that was comprised of students from IVC and Saddleback College. The students of the two colleges won multiple awards at regional and national speech and debate tournaments.

In 1987, because the Saddleback Community College District changed its name to the South Orange County Community College District, this hybrid team changed its name to South Orange County Forensics. Craig left coaching in 1990 and Paul and Bob left in 1993. Co-directors of the team, Gary Rybold and Larry Radden led the South Orange County Team to win several individual and team sweepstakes awards at Phi Rho Pi, NPDA, State Championships, and regional invitationals. The district Forensics Team amassed 150 sweepstakes awards over 11 years and a plethora of individual successes.

In 2006, IVC and Saddleback decided to split up, which ultimately lead to Saddleback’s Team decision to revert back to its original name, "Saddleback Forensics". Current coaches Larry Radden, Jules Throckmorton, and Heidi Mueller-Ochoa and their students are preparing for what they project to be an amazing year for the Saddleback Forensics Team.
