Course Objective:  This course covers polynomials, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions, matrices and determinants, sequences and series. The prerequisite course is Math 124 Trigometry.

 

Math 2:

Students who successfully complete Math 2 will be able to:

  1. demonstrate mastery of the computational skills that will prepare them to succeed in calculus.
  2. demonstrate critical thinking skills by solving word problems whose difficulty level is appropriate for this class.
  3. demonstrate that they are prepared for the visual/graphical nature of calculus by being able to generate the graphs of a variety of types of functions.

 

Required Textbook: Pre-calculus, 8th Edition by Roland Larson.

 

Only a scientific calculator will be allowed during the exams and quizzes.  Absolutely no other electronic devices, such as palm pilots and cell phones, are allowed in class.   No graphing calculators are allowed. Sharing calculators is not allowed during exams or quizzes.  

 

Homework:  Homework will be assigned each class period but will not be collected.

Complete the homework assignments in order to prepare for the tests and quizzes.  The exams questions are similar to the homework questions and notes. 

 

Attendance will be taken every day. A student that misses more than 6 hours

of class time may be dropped from the class.  It is the student’s responsibility to drop from

the class.  The last day to drop without a W is September 23th, 2011.  The last day to drop with a W is November 3th, 2011. 

 

Any student that sleeps in class will be marked absent for the day.

Any student using a cell phone or text messaging during class will be asked to leave and will lose the attendance hours for the day. 

 

Exams and Quizzes:  There will be 4 exams, 10 quizzes and one Final.   

 

4 Exams X 120 points = 480 pts

10 Quizzes X 10 pts = 100 pts

1 Final = 160 pts

80-90% B

70-79% C

60-69% D

0-59% F

 

To pass the class with a grade of C or better, you must earn 518 points or higher out of the total 740.

 

Make-up Exams. You will be allowed only one make-up exam during this semester, but you will receive only 90% of the exam score.  If you want a make-up exam, you must make prior arrangements with me, in person, no later than the day of the exam. If you do not make arrangements with me, you will receive a zero for the exam. The make-up exam is usually more difficult than the in-class exam. There are no make-up quizzes or make-up final.

 

I have a zero tolerance for cheating.   Any student caught cheating will receive a minimum of zero on that exam or quiz and report immediately to the Dean of Math and Sciences. An Academic Dishonesty Report will be filed with the President of Instructions Office. The student may also be subject to further administrative action such as suspension or expulsion from the college. Read the student handout. 

 

Please no food or drinks in the classroom.
