Communication

  • Email is the best and fastest method of communication for this class.
  • You must put Psych 7 and your ticket number in the subject line of all email sent to the instructor. My email is filtered and anything that is not labeled automatically gets deleted. You can find your ticket number on your registration information either from my site or the printed version that was mailed to you. This is very important! Incorrectly labled email does not get answered.
  • If you send email from an address other than your school address, make sure your full name is also included. Surfchick200@yahoo.com or toocute@earthlink.net are often hard for me to match up with student names :)
  • If you have ever changed your name since attending a school in this district, your user name (what shows up in blackboard) and email name might not match up, so make sure to always use both.

Upon Completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and analyze the various theories in developmental psychology

  • List and analyze developmental tasks for the child and adolescent
  • Describe observable behavior in scientific terms
  • Analyze behavior in terms of developmental theory
  • Apply theories to real situations with children and adolescents
  • Evaluate methods of application of theories.

Assignments
Typical assignments for this course consist of:

  • Discussion Postings
  • Short Written Reflection/Application Activities
  • Observation/Analysis Papers
  • CD Rom exercises
  • Midterm and Final (online)

Homework Submission

  • Weekly Homework folders become available on Monday by mid day and disappear the following Monday at midnight. Students may work at their own pace within the week, with first discussion postings due by Saturday noon and all other work due midnight on Monday.
  • Late work is subject to point deduction and is only accepted through Wednesday of the week it is due.
  • If you will be traveling during the semester, make sure you know where there will be internet access as I expect you to always be able to find a connection and I do not extend dates unless Saddleback's Server is down.
  • In the folders are descriptions and submission directions for each assignment.
  • Students are expected to use academic writing skills in all work including email and discussion postings.  For help please visit the Learning Assistance Program.
  • Feedback on assignments will be given in several ways:
  • Via a discussion response (either an overall class response or individual responses on the discussion board)
  • In the grade book in your assignment area
  • Mailed back to you on papers submitted in hard copy.

Discussion Board Participation
One of the fundamental foundations of my online classes is that they are not "self-paced" -- everyone must work together through the course. In order for us to build meaning together and to learn from each other we need to be involved in conversations with each other. Instructions on how to post and how posts will be graded will be included in the weekly homework folders. This is a 3 unit class, it is important to check into the discussion sections at least 3 times a week.

Gradebook

  • You will be able to check your grades by going to the student tools area.
  • Grades are updated each week, some scores post automatically, some do not. For discussions and observations, you will see either an equals sign (-) or a blank until I post your score. For assignments submitted via an assignment box and for exams, you will see an exclamation point (!) in the grade box until I grade and post your score.

Students with Special Needs
Special Services (Disabled Student Programs and Services) is committed to serving students with disabilities enrolled at Saddleback College and to serve you, the faculty, in your instructional capacity. We are a reliable source of information, consultation and liaison for all classroom and campus disability issues.

To qualify for services, students must have a known or documented disability, verification by an appropriate professional, and an educational limitation that precludes the student from fully participating in general instruction without specialized services or academic adjustments. Students should apply for eligibility in Special Services immediately after they complete their application for admission to the college.

Students are encouraged to speak with their instructors early in the semester to discuss their educational functional limitations and to make their instructors aware of authorized academic adjustments. Students are not required to disclose their specific disability but may do so out of personal choice. Students must inform you of their functional limitations within a reasonable time frame before quizzes, exams or finals.

All information related to a student's disability must remain confidential. If you have any questions concerning a student or disability, please contact the Special Services department for information at 582-4885 or in person in SSC 113. You may also visit their web page at DSPS
