Course Objectives:

  1. Understand self in relation to culture & communication dynamics in interpersonal, group & public speaking situations.
  2. Expand interpersonal & cultural communication competencies
  3. Improve empathetic abilities & acknowledge alternative perspectives
  4. Research and report on customs, traditions, values, lifestyles & unique communication components of another culture.

Course Requirements & Grading
 

Three exams @ 50 points each 150 points 270-300 A
Group Report 100 points 240-269 B
Workbook Exercises 20 points 210-239 C
    180-209 D
Participation 30 points etc.
 

Class Policies

Attendance is the single most important factor of course as it is a communication course.  College policy states may drop with 6 hrs cumulative absence. Will deduct 20 points for each absence after 6 hours. Will add 10 points for no more than 3 hrs absence.

Assignments are due at beginning of class on due date. If you must miss class, mail or deliver assignment on due date to Kaye Nubel, Saddleback College, Fine Arts & Communication Dept., 28000 Marguerite Parkway, Mission Viejo, CA 92692 or send to class.

Read the text to compliment lectures. Take notes. Ask questions. Challenge research.

May sign up on “credit/no credit” option. You are responsible for doing that in the admissions office in first third of class.

Text: Communication Between Cultures by Samovar, Porter & Stefani, 2001, 4th Ed. Plus activity book which you must purchase from bookstore. Please bring a 3 ring binder for handouts. Bring book & binder each class.
