Course Objectives:

  1. Enhance understanding between men & women.
  2. Understand how communication intersects with culture & gender.
  3. Explore bases for, theories of, and processes of gender specific communication.
  4. Improve empathetic abilities & acknowledge alternative perspectives.
  5. Become more competent communicators by gaining increased behavioral flexibility.

Part 2: Codes Language * Vocabulary, Questions, and Dominance 
Space, Touch, and Movement * Revealing and Expressing
Part 3: Contexts Friendships, Romantic Relationships, and Family Forms 
The Classroom, Politics, and The Workplace * Media
 
Course Requirements & Grading
 
Three exams @ 50 points each 150 points 270-300 A
    240-269 B
Media Messages 35 points 210-239 C
Term Project 85 points 180-209 D
Participation 30 points etc.
 

Class Policies

Attendance is the single most important factor of course as it is a communication course. College policy states may drop with 6 hrs cumulative absence. will deduct 20 points for each absence after 6 hours. Will add 10 points for no more than 3 hrs absence.

Assignments are due at beginning of class on due date. There is no make up or extra credit. If you must miss class mail assignment on due date & phone instructor.

Read the text to compliment lectures. Take notes. Ask questions. CShallenge research.

Since this is new area of study with possibility of volatile & defensive rather that objectivity & cooperation, an open mind and sense of humor is a requirement.

May sign up on “credit/no credit” option. You are responsible for doing that in the admissions office in first third of class.
