Textbook
GIS
Fundamentals. A First
Text on Geographic Information Systems, 2nd ed., Paul Bolstad. Eider Press,
2005. ISBN: 978-0-9717647-1-2.
Additional readings may be assigned.
2.
Software If you have
questions about the software – come to the first class before you
buy it.
You need access to a computer with
the loaded software, ArcGIS 9.2. Ideally, this means you will
purchase and load the software onto your personal computer.
Alternatively, there are two computers with ArcGIS 9 in the Learning Assistance
Program (LAP) in the
lower level of the Library. The LAP is not open on the weekends so
you must have time during the week to access these computers if you
do not have access to the software elsewhere.
You can use ArcGIS
version 9.1 but you will have to make some compensations for the
change in versions.
There are two options
to purchase the software:
·
180-day license which
comes with the textbook, Getting to Know ArcGIS (ISBN:
1-58948-083-X). This
option includes tutorials.
·
1-year student
edition. This option
does not include tutorials, and costs approximately $100.00 For details, see: http://www.esri.com/industries/university/education/student_faqs.html
Before
purchasing the software, make sure your computer meets minimum
hardware and software requirements. ESRI, the software
developer, lists current requirements on their website. Click
here or go to: http://www.esri.com/industries/university/education/student-eval_faqs.html
and scroll to System Requirements.
Currently (10/2007) ArcGIS 9.2 is not supported
onVISTA. ArcGIS 9.1 is not and will
not be supported on VISTA. If you are running
VISTA at home, you will need to use
the computers at Saddleback (or elsewhere) to complete the
assignments.
3. Electronic data storage
device
– flash drive
(thumb drive).
