MUSIC 29
From St. Hildegard To Madonna

Spring Semester
Saddleback College

This course focuses on women musicians and composers from historical and societal perspectives. The major emphasis is on art music in Western Europe and the United States from the Middle Ages to the present, with additional attention given to women in jazz, popular and rock music and to women musicians in non-Western cultures.

Emphases are on the experiences of women musicians and composers as they worked within the predominantly male institutional structures and on the actual music produced by women. Additionally, the relationship of gender and sexuality to music will be a major theme throughout the course.

There are no tests in the class. Grades are based on journal writing, concert attendance, listening assignments, and a final paper presented to the class.
