Laboratory Safety
This laboratory is an active and dynamic environment. In each and every lab exercise, there is a
possibility for accidents to occur. Our
laboratory work may involve using potentially hazardous chemicals and/or
reagents. Our primary concerns are to
learn and practice safe laboratory techniques, and to follow procedures that
permit the safe handling of all laboratory chemicals, solutions and
equipment. Below is a list of
procedures and guidelines that will minimize accidents and foster safe
laboratory operations and handling of all laboratory materials and equipment.
- Do not eat, drink,
smoke or store food in the laboratory.
Avoid all finger to mouth contact.
- Report ALL accidents
immediately!
- Wipe down the lab
bench surface with disinfectant before each lab period.
- Keep the lab bench
clear of any unnecessary books or other items.
- Know the locations of
fire extinguishers, the fire blanket, the eyewash apparatus, emergency
flashlights and the first aid kit.
- Know emergency
procedures, phone numbers and evacuation routes (see information on the
bulletin board in the front of the classroom).
- Use caution when
handling laboratory equipment. Do
not operate laboratory equipment unless you have been instructed on proper
use.
- Use caution when
using the bunsen burners and hotplates.
Keep long hair tied back and roll up long, baggy sleeves.
- Handle glassware with
care. Do not use broken or chipped
glassware.
- Clean up all spills
according to laboratory safety procedures and MSDS recommendations.
- Never mouth pipette –
you could ingest/inhale hazardous substances.
- Never smell a
solution, chemical or reagent at close range. Wave your hand over the container and smell with your nose
away from the container.
Inhalation of hazardous solutions could have serious health risks.
- Wear gloves in the
lab if your hands have cuts or suffer broken skin.
- Inform your
instructor of any allergies or medical conditions you may have that could
directly affect your work in the lab.
- Under no
circumstances are visitors allowed in the lab without the permission of
the instructor.
- Absolutely no
children allowed in the laboratory.
- Any student who fails
to follow these laboratory rules or who behaves in an unsafe manner; will
be removed from the laboratory.
- If you have any
questions concerning safety or proper lab procedure, ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR.
I,
the undersigned, have read the above rules, and agree to observe and abide by
them.
