Proanthocyanidins are flavonoid molecules found in many plants. They are believed to have antibacterial properties and increase longevity. This study tested the hypothesis that grape seed proanthocyanidins inhibit bacterial growth. Using the Kirby-Bauer disk-diffusion method, 24 nutrient agar plates were used to test the effects on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus mutans. The proanthocyanidins were placed on the agar in 0.1 g/200 mL, 0.2 g/200 mL, 0.3 g/200mL, and 1.8 g/200 g/mL concentrations, as well as in powder form. The plates were then incubated for 48 hours at 37°C. No inhibition was observed for any of the concentrations with either bacterium.
