This is an educational field studies to visit and learn about plants and animals found in southern Arizona. Some of the primary objectives of the class will be to emphasize the natural history and biological resources of the Sonoran Desert.
Pretrip Preparation: Time and Place
Departure time: On the March 10 at 3:30 pm. Everyone will meet in Parking Lot #1 by the Security Office on lower campus. Return time will vary due to weather, traffic, or other unexpected occurrences on the way back to Saddleback College.
Notepad and You will bring a notepad so you can take notes Camera in the field and a camera so you can take pictures and add them to your class portfolio.
Credit: 2 unit
Grades: Grades will be based on the following things: (1) attitude, 50 points (2) participation, 50 points, and (3) notepad, handouts and picture portfolio, 100 points.
NOTEPAD: will consist of a travel log and lecture topics, accompanied by drawings, handouts (where given), and if appropriate, specimens. The notepad and picture portfolio will be turned at the post meeting. If I do not receive your notepad and picture portfolio by the designated date, one of two things will happen: (1) if you turn them in late, your grade will be lowered, or (2) if you do not turn anything in, even if you are taking the class for Credit/No-Credit, you will receive the lowest grade on the appropriate grading scale.
GRADING: Will be based on the following things:
1. Completeness of the notepad and picture portfolio
2. Attitude
3. Participation
A- superior work, completion of all items (1-3).
B- above average work, completion of all items (1-3).
C- average work, completion of all items (1-3).
D- below average work, completion of all items (1-3).
F- poor work, unfinished assignment, or if you fail to turn in a notepad and/or a picture portfolio.
*CR- completion of all items (1-3) with at least average work.
NCR-unfinished assignment or failure to turn in notepad and/or a picture portfolio.
Note: Any student receiving a letter grade (F) or NCR can enroll again for the same class when it is offered again in the college schedule.
Insurance Statement: Each student must personally sign an insurance waiver form.
Private Cars: No private cars may be taken of the trip.
Field Study Transportation: The College will provide transportation for the trip in school vehicles. The fee for the course covers transportation, camping fees, and other incidental expenses as they may occur.
Conduct: Participants are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly manner, to obey all State and Federal Laws, and follow the directions of the instructor or his designated representative.
A student may be disciplined for one or more of the following causes related to college activity or attendance.
- Continued disruptive behavior continued willful disobedience, profanity or vulgarity, or the open and persistent defiance of the authority of, or persistent abuse or district or college personnel.
- Assault, battery, or any threat of force or violence to a student, district or college personnel.
- Willful misconduct resulting in injury or death to a student or college or district personnel or willful misconduct resulting in cutting, defacing, theft, or other injury to any real or personal property owned by the district, college personnel, or students in attendance at the college.
- Willfully or persistent smoking in an area where smoking has been prohibited.
- Cheating or plagiarizing in relation to a district or college course.
- Disorderly, lewd, indecent, or obscene conduct on district-owned or controlled property.
- The obstruction or disruption of the educational process.
- Any other cause not previously listed which is identified as good cause.
- All of the Student Code of Conduct have not been listed, so if you wish to learn more about the college's policies please refer to the student handbook.
ALCOHOL AND DRUGS: Absolutely NO DRUGS or ALCOHOL. State law prohibits alcohol at or on school activities, so there is no place for either on this field study. If you cannot comply with the law and college policy, then do not go on the trip.
Firearms: No firearms are allowed on the trip.

DAY 1 (3/10) Friday

Time: Meet in parking lot #1 by the security office at 3:00 pm to load cargo van and passenger vans for field studies. DON'T FORGET to bring a sack-lunch, and try not to drink
too much coffee, and make a restroom visit before the trip.
Camp at Painted Rocks State Park. (9:00 pm)
*(An alternate route would be from San Bernardino to Blythe and Quartzsite, Arizona. – dry camping on BLM land)
DAY 2 (3/11) Saturday

7:00 am Cook breakfast, make lunches and break camp and pack-up vehicles.
8:00 am Drive to Phoenix and then to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, Arizona. Arrive about 1:00 pm for tour of gardens ($7.50 fee).
3:30 pm Drive to Florence and then to Tucson, Arizona. We will stay in the Group Campsite at the Santa Catalina State Park Campground.
6:00 pm Dinner, conversation, and relaxation.
DAY 3 (3/12) Sunday

6:30 am Breakfast and make lunches and pack-up vehicles.
8:30 am Drive to Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona. We will visit, and if weather permits, walk approximately 8 miles from Massai Point to the Visitor Center. Along the way we will study native plants.
4:00 pm The drive time to Tucson is approximately 2 hours.
6:00 pm Prepare dinner.
DAY 4 (3/13) Monday

7:00 am Cook breakfast, pack up equipment, make lunches and prepare for the Arizona Senora Desert Museum.
9:00 am Drive to the Museum.
2:00 pm Drive to Eastern Saguaro National Park.
5:00 pm Drive to Catalina State Park Campground.
Day 5 (3/14) Tuesday

8:00 am Drive to Organ Pipe National Park
4:30 pm Return back to camp

Drive to Tucson to visit one of the following botanical centers: Tohono Chul Park (Tour of native plant gardens.)

Prepare for trip back to Saddleback College. We will drive on Hwys 10 & 8 through Yuma and San Diego. If time permits we will stop at the Century House Museum & Gardens in Yuma. This adobe house was built in 1870's and was restored in 1890's by a businessman. It has a small garden displaying plants common to Yuma, including a few native plants.
