Saddlebacks' Classified Senate was among the first classified senates in the state, which began meeting around 1982. The senate is an active force in the shared governance process and staff development activities. The State-wide non-profit organization that supports the role of classified staff in the California Community College System is 4 CS (Classified Senate).
Classified senates were developed to represent classified staff in participatory governance issues only -- those areas not pertaining to collective bargaining. Shared governance was designed to address non-negotiable items and establish an environment of participatory, consultative governance. Participation comes from both senate and union in the governance process.
As of Fall 2005, Saddlebacks' College Classified Senate represents
approximately 270 full time classified employees and a unknown number of part-time classified employees. As of 2007, the SC classified Senate represents approximately 174 full time classified and 64 part time employees, or a total of 258 employees.
As of Fall 2005, Saddleback serves over 23,800 students. Additional information can be found at the SOCCCD district's Almanac or the state demographic reports.
