Academic Senate of Saddleback College

Pursuant to Title 5 of the Administrative Code of California, Section 53200, the Academic Senate is a faculty organization whose primary function is to make recommendations with respect to academic and professional matters as it relates, in particular, to the following areas:

  1. Curriculum, including establishing prerequisites and places courses within disciplines;
  2. Degree and certificate requirements;
  3. Grading policies;
  4. Educational program development;
  5. Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success;
  6. College governance structures, as related to faculty roles;
  7. Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes;
  8. Policies for faculty professional development activities;
  9. Processes for program review;
  10. Processes for institutional planning and budget development;
  11. Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon.

According to Education Code, the Academic Senate is also responsible for jointly developing with the District policies and procedures related to faculty hiring (section 87360B) and administrative retreat rights (section 87458A).

The Saddleback College Academic Senate is a representative body, with each instructional area receiving a senator for every ten full-time faculty members or portion thereof, to a maximum of four.

Senate Goals

  • Create and implement a process for Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) assessment across the campus.
  • Revise and streamline the Program Review process for both instructional programs and student support and administrative services.
  • Establish a functioning Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
  • Update the College committee structure, Senate approval process, and committee web sites.
  • Refresh and restructure the Academic Senate web site.
  • Prepare the College Accreditation Progress Report and begin preparations for the 2007 Accreditation Midterm Report.
  • Establish procedures for implementing the contracted Tenure Review process, and work with the Faculty Association in devising an equitable and comprehensive Tenure Review process.
  • Jointly develop a mutually agreed upon Full-Time Faculty Hiring Policy with District Administration.  Pursue every avenue to make certain that the emphasis is placed upon the faculty to ensure the quality of their faculty peers.
  • Endorse and encourage an increase in classified and technical staff positions which support college programs and services.
