SADDLEBACK COLLEGE - FLEXIBLE CALENDAR PROGRAM

.....1.
Under terms of the Flexible Calendar Program agreed upon between the Chancellor, California Community Colleges, and the SOCCCD, full-time faculty members are expected to complete 38 annual hours of professional development activities. Reported activity hours become credits.
2.
The goal of the flex program is to provide time for faculty members to engage in activities that lead to staff, student and instructional improvement.
3.
The amount of time provided to pursue improvement is 38 hours (9 days). These 38 hours are been taken away from regular student instruction. If there were no Flex Program in effect, faculty members would partake in an additional 38 hours (3 weeks) of instruction and related professional contractual duties.
4.
The academic year has 178 days. These days are apportioned in this way: 156 days for instruction; 10 days for final examinations; 9 days for staff development (Flex Program); and 3 faculty contractual days.
5.
The time period during which flex activities may be performed, reported, and credited toward the 38 hour target is July 1 through June 30. The for purposes of earning credit, the academic year is identical to the fiscal year.
6.
If a faculty member reports fewer than 38 hours, the number of hours equal to the unreported hours is recorded as an absence.
7.
Hours reported beyond 38 receive no additional credit, although they are recorded as having been performed.
8.
Flex hours performed during one academic year may not be carried forward to the next year, awarded to a prior year, nor be "banked".
9.
Time spent by faculty members in college or district committee meetings may not count as flex hours, unless the meetings occur during an in-service week.
10.
Time spent by faculty members in division or department meetings may not count as flex hours, unless the meetings occur during an in-service week.
11.
Flex credit for presenting an activity during in-service week is awarded at a ratio of 3 to 1. Thus a presentation lasting 1.50 hours garners 4.50 flex credits.
12.
If a faculty member presents the same activity more than once during the same in-service week, credit is awarded at a ratio of 3 to 1 for the first presentation, but only 1 to 1 for subsequent presesntations.
13.
There is no flex credit awarded for preparation time to present an in-service week event beyond the extra 2 hours already awarded.
14.
Flex credit may not be awarded for performing routine duties normally associated with the faculty members contract duties.
15.
Flex credit may not be awarded if the requestor is otherwise being compensated for the activity. This does not apply to funds being given to defray the cost of attendance.
16.
Flex credit may not be awarded for completion of coursework that is intended to result in advancement on the salary schedule.
