EMT Basic
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is designed to educate and train the student to "serve as a vital link in the pre-hospital chain of a healthcare team". An EMT-Basic possess the necessary knowledge and skills needed to provide emergency medical care to patients at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized service.
At the successful completion of the course and the required national testing, an EMT-Basic will be able to evaluate a patient's condition, either medical or trauma, and provide the appropriate assessment-based treatment which includes the packaging and transportation of the patient.
Matriculation testing is required if you have not completed English 1B (transfer level composition or equivalent)
About the EMT-B Course
Please refer to the class schedule for when the EMT course will be offered.
As stated in the college catalog, EMT 205 is "a fundamental skills and theory course in emergency medical care." Emphasis is placed on patient assessment, basic pathophysiology of commonly encountered disorders, and the performance of skills used in the pre hospital emergency setting. Some of the skills you will learn include: patient assessment and history taking, vital sign monitoring, bandaging/splinting, emergency childbirth, transport of ill/injured adults and children, and CPR.
The lecture/skills lab portion of the course takes place at the college. During the course, you will complete two 8 hour ride-a-longs with an ambulance company and 8 hours of observation/basic patient care in a local hospital emergency department. These experiences will be scheduled during class.
The EMT classes are no longer EMT 205 and EMT 205L
new class codes are
***EMT 289 AND EMT 289C***

Other EMT Educations Opportunities
If you plan to continue your education and become a paramedic (EMT-P) you will need 1 year full time work experience as a first responder EMT.
