Nursing Program
Saddleback College offers a National League for Nursing (NLN) and Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) accredited Registered Nursing Program. The purposes of this program in Nursing are to provide the education necessary to develop competent practitioners in nursing and to provide a base for the continuing development of the student as an individual. Completion of the nursing program allows the student to sit for the State of California NCLEX examination.
Criteria for admittance and application packets are available in the Health Sciences and Human Services division office or click on the links located at the left side of this page.
New Enrollment Criteria Effective June 2010 for the Spring 2011 Class. |
Students requesting enrollment for the Spring 2011 nursing class will be chosen using the new enrollment criteria. To see the new criteria, click here.
Students who have been invited into the nursing program must pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) prior to program enrollment. This is a diagnostic test that covers Basic Math, English, Reading, and Science. Students who fail to achieve a passing score will be required to complete additional pre-nursing course work. Students will have one year to complete their remediation, then they must re-take and pass the TEAS test for entry. For more information on the TEAS test, or to purchase a study guide, log on to the ATI Testing website.
The Saddleback College Associate Degree Nursing Program requires background checks on all students enrolled and/or entering the nursing program. This policy was instituted because the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and other Organizations (JCAHO) requires any health care facility that requires employees to have personal criminal background checks must also require the same background check for students and volunteers involved in patient care.
We invite students into the program based on our academic scoring system. This score is determined by using the three pre-requisite science grades, and overall GPA from a transcript with the most recent 12 units or more from a college or university. Please refer to the Procedure for Application and Admission for more information on academic scoring.
A new selection criteria will be utilized for the class beginning Spring, 2011. Click here for an overview of this new criteria.
Applications for Fall 2010 will be accepted February 16th through March 2nd, 2010 in the Division Office during the hours of 8am to 4:30pm. Applications are not accepted on holidays, Saturdays or Sundays. This class will be chosen using the current selection criteria.
Only complete applications will be reviewed. In progress work will not be accepted. Once a student is invited into the program, there will be specific deadlines for paperwork and testing that will have to be met in order to be cleared to register for classes. Since the program is impacted, we will not be accepting students with international student F-1 visas into the nursing program.
A student does not need an appointment to complete an application, but it is imperative that students continue to meet with their counselors to determine transferability of classes, general education requirements, and eligibility for application to the nursing program.
We encourage all students interested in our nursing program to attend a nursing information session. The next RN information sessions are scheduled for February 1st at noon and April 19th at 7pm. Our LVN-RN information sessions are scheduled for January 19th at noon, March 9th at 2pm, and May 4th at 4pm. Reservations are not required. The location will be announced when available.
