SECTION 1 INTRO AND TECH REQUIREMENTS: Scene 1-1: Hello, and Welcome to Saddleback College’s User Services. Today we’ll be covering how to log into Blackboard some basic navigation. This demonstration has been produced on Windows XP operating system and Internet Explorer 6.0 browser. Scene 1-2: Blackboard is a web-based course information management tool that helps both faculty and students communicate and collaborate on classroom material. Blackboard is used both as a full distance education mechanism as well as a just a simple enhancement to the in-class experience. Scene 1-3: Before we get started there are some minimum technical requirements that are necessary to make your experience using Blackboard trouble-free and fun. Scene 1-4: The first thing you need – and probably have if you’re viewing this clip – is internet access. It’s advisable to have at least a 56k dial up connection. Scene 1-5: Next, you’ll want to use Internet Explorer version 6.0 or above. You’ll need to have all your cookies and javascript enabled (if you’re not sure what that is refer to your “help” button located at the top of the browser window in IE). Scene 1-6: Although you can use Blackboard’s learning system with MAC operating systems, PC’s using Microsoft Windows 98 and above are preferable, because instructors post information using Microsoft Office products such as Powerpoint and Word. Scene 1-7: You’ll need to be sure you have some standard browser plug-ins. If you need plug-ins or want to know more about them, go to /itc/user/downloads.html SECTION TWO – LOGIN: Scene 2-1: Now that you’ve got the things you’ll need to make Blackboard work properly, it’s time to log on. Scene 2-2: Generally there is a shortcut for Internet Explorer on your desktop or task bar, but if you do not see the blue E with the circle around it, go to the START button, then select PROGRAMS, next select INTERNET EXPLORER. Scene 2-3: Once you’ve opened your Internet Explorer Browser, type http://socccd.blackboard.com in the location bar (located at the top of the page) and click GO or hit your ENTER button. BE SURE THERE ARE NO WWW’s in the url website address. Scene 2-4: You should see the Blackboard login page. Click the LOGIN button on the left site. The next screen takes you to the authentication page. Scene 2-4: In the blank space next to the user name, type the first part of your email user name (i.e. jdoe0). And the password is your is your email password (default is your student ID or the last four digits of your social + 00). Click LOGIN. SECTION 3 – GENERAL: MY INSTITUTION TAB Scene 3-1: The first screen you’ll see once you’ve logged in is the MY INSTITUTION TAB. On this tab you will find the TOOLS section, which contains all the announcements, calendar items, tasks, grades, email functions and user directories for ALL the classes you are enrolled in that are utilizing Blackboard’s course management system. The address book and personal information sections apply to you only. SECTION 4 – CUSTOMIZE MY INSTITUTION TAB Scene 4-1: You can customize the MY INSTITUTION Tab area by clicking the minus or the X in the upper right corner of any of the windows boxes shown on the page. The minus allows you to minimize each module and the X takes them off completely. Scene 4-2: You can also customize the views by selecting the pencil icon. The pencil on the Announcements window module will allow you to change the amount of days’ views you wish to see. And the pencil tool on the Courses window module and make changes by clicking on the checkboxes. SECTION 5 – ACCESS THE COURSE YOU ARE TEACHING Scene 5-1: Click on the text link for your course located in the MY COURSES window module on the right side of the screen. SECTION 6 – GENERAL NAVIGATION IN STUDENT VIEW Scene 6-1: The default page students always see is the Announcements page. Click the linked words on the left of the screen to access each area of the course. This is student view only. You cannot add or change content from this view. Scene 6-2: Click on the small arrow with a circle around it located in the upper left corner to expand and contract the navigation menu (this is helpful if you’re demonstrating live to your class and would like them to see a larger screen). Scene 6-3: The course map is a helpful way to see at a glance exactly what the structure of the course is. The map opens in a separate, smaller window. Select OPEN ALL, CLOSE ALL, or click the plus to the left of the envelopes to expand the sections. Click the X in the upper right corner to close it down. SECTION 7 – CONTROL PANEL OVERVIEW Scene 7-1: Select the CONTROL PANEL link to access the areas you’d like to change or add content to. Scene 7-2: To find your way back to the control panel, select the links at the top of the page (bread crumbs). Scene 7-3: You can exit your class at any time by selecting the MY INSTITUTION tab at the top left. Scene 7-4: When you are ready to log out, be sure to click on the LOGOUT icon in the upper middle of the screen; then the X in the far upper right corner. Logging out completely ensures no one else will have access to your Blackboard account. SECTION 8 – CAMPUS STUDENT ENROLLMENT Scene 8-1: Every campus has a different procedure for enrolling students into Blackboard. Saddleback batch enrolls users. After you’ve downloaded your roster from MySite and saved it to your desktop, go back to Blackboard’s control panel. Scene 8-5: Select BATCH ENROLL USERS FOR COURSE Scene 8-6: Go to Section 2, FILE UPLOAD and select BROWSE. Scene 8-7: Find the file saved to your desktop. Scene 8-8: Click SUBMIT. Scene 8-9: You’ll see a listing of all the students you just batch enrolled in the class.
