Turning OFF your computer.
Go to the START button, click once and pull to Shutdown. Click in the circle - Shut down computer.
Click Yes.

Turning ON your computer.
Turn the Power switch on your unit located on the floor.
Logon window will appear. This is your Windows95 identification. Enter user name and password. A second window might appear to log onto a Network. You must use your username and password that the Network administrator has given you.

During the workweek you should leave your computer ON by the following method. Click the START button and go to Shutdown. Now click in the circle - Close all programs and log on as a different user. Click Yes. This will stop other users from logging on to the Network.

MOUSE has 2 buttons. Left click is the one you will use most of the time. Right click lets you perform certain functions. (Properties)

WINDOWS
Every window will have three buttons located upper right corner.
  • Underline button will close the window putting it on the taskbar
  • Square button will minimize or maximize
  • X button will close it completely taking it off the taskbar

Listed below are some important items/icons that might appear on your desktop:

MY COMPUTER
Displays what is available on your computer. C Drive, (which is your Hard drive) CD-ROM, Floppy Drive, Network connections, Control panels and Printers
NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD
Shows you what you are able to communicate with on the campus network.
RECYCLE BIN
Another name for Trash. Drag items into the Bin. The bin will actually show papers inside of it. To find out what is in before you empty it, double-click to open it. Go to File pull down to Empty Recycle Bin
BRIEFCASE
Update files on two computers by keeping multiple versions of a file in sync with each other.
  START
Start button is where you open a document, change system settings, get Help, and find items on your computer
  TASKBAR
Normally located on the bottom of the screen. This contains the Start button and will show all opened applications/documents. You can place the taskbar on any side of the screen by simply clicking in the gray area of the taskbar and dragging it to the new location.

 

IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE TASKBAR AND START BUTTON, DO NOT PANIC!
The following has happened:

  1. The taskbar was minimized too much. It was not appearing. Go to any side that has a gray thin area and click dragging toward the center and it will appear.
  2. It was hidden. If you simply move your mouse to each side of the screen it will appear on one side. This feature is used when you need to utilize your entire screen to give you more screen space. To bring it back permanently go to the START button and click, go up to SETTINGS and over to TASKBAR. Under Taskbar Options click the Auto hide off. Click APPLY and OK.

MS OFFICE SHORTCUT BAR
To relocate to a different side of screen, click in any black/grey area and drag and release.

If your MS SHORTCUT BAR is not appearing, do the following:

  1. First go to START button-click, go to PROGRAMS. Go over to STARTUP. Pull down to MS OFFICE SHORTCUT BAR. If not there go to next step.
  2. Second go to START button-click, go to PROGRAMS, go to WINDOWS EXPLORER. Click C DRIVE. Locate PROGRAM FILES folder and click to open. Click on MICROSOFT OFFICE folder and open. Click on MS Office Shortcut Bar and copy (Ctl C) or Edit - Copy. Go to C DRIVE and locate WINDOWS folder and open. Open START MENU folder. Open PROGRAMS folder and open STARTUP folder. Now paste shortcut (Ctl V) or Edit - Paste.

CUSTOMIZING YOUR MS OFFICE TOOLBAR
Right-click on any black or grey area. Pull down to CUSTOMIZE. Click on the BUTTON index tab. Click in the boxes to select or deselect your buttons. You can also add a folder or file by clicking on the appropriate button. Generally, you add MY DOCUMENTS which is the default folder. Anything in the MS Office tool bar only requires a single click to open.

START BUTTON MENUS
Click once on the START button and the below menu will appear
PROGRAM MANAGER - Displays a list of programs available on your computer. Notice that whenever you see a folder icon it means there are more choices.
DOCUMENTS - Displays a list of documents you have previously opened.
SETTINGS

  1. Control panel - Changing of screen colors, sound, time.
  2. Printer - Choose printers or settings
  3. Taskbar - Everytime a program or window is opened a button representing the window will appear on the taskbar. To switch between windows just click the button you want.
FIND - Find a folder or file. (search engine) If you know the name of the file enter the information, click Find Now or click Browse button to search for the name of folder or file.
HELP - Starts the Help. It is virtually an online manual with Index, Contents, or Find. Click on any green underlined text and a definition of the term will appear.
RUN - Starts a program or opens a folder with MS-DOS
SHUT DOWN - Shuts down or restarts your computer, or logs you off. A screen message might appear to let you know when you can safely turn off the computer and monitor

CONTROL PANELS SETTINGS
From the START button go to Settings and over to Control Panels. There are several items that you can change and adjust.

  1. Date/Time -Set your time and the time zone. Windows 95 has a box to check for automatic daylight savings time.
  2. Display -Background, Screen Saver and Appearance are the indexes you will use.
  3. Mouse
    1. Button index - You can change configuration for left handed people.
    2. Double-click speed - Slow it down or make it faster.
    3. Pointers Index - Under Scheme - click and choose a different icon for a pointer.
    4. Motion - Your pointer speed can be adjusted and you can use a pointer trail.
  4. Printers - This is where you would add a printer or check on the properties of the printer that you have by right clicking.
  5. Sounds - Choose sounds of all types and for all actions, i.e. closing a window, moving a mouse, double-clicking.

OPENING A DOCUMENT
There are several ways to open a document

  1. Open the program, go to File menu pull down to open and locate the document.
  2. From the Start menu go to Documents to open a recently opened document

Let's go to the START button and go to PROGRAMS and open any application. Notice that the application will now have a window located on the taskbar. Repeat this step again - now you have 2 of the same application open and running at the same time. The only limit as to how many copies you keep open is your physical memory. You can even increase the width of the taskbar to allow more than one row of open windows. You do this by placing your mouse at the innermost area until you see a double arrow. Click and hold dragging inward to increase the width.

ALT KEY AND TAB KEY
Thess toggle you back and forth to your open windows. Hold down the Alt key down and use the Tab key to continue in a circle.

TO CHANGE THE VIEWS OF ICONS
Open My Computer
Go under View and choose style
or
Pull down to Options - Click on Folder card.
Click in the circle for Browse folders for using a single window. This will prevent you from having to many windows open.

HOW TO KEEP EVERYDAY PROGRAMS HANDY FOR QUICK USE
Adding Programs
Click on program icon and drag to the START button. The icon will now appear at the top of the Start menu.

Create Shortcuts
Locate the program icon or item/file you want to access
Use the right mouse button to drag the icon or item to the desktop. Pull down to Create Shortcut here. The icon or item will now have a curved arrow in the lower left corner. This indicates it is a shortcut and not the original
