| The English curriculum is divided into several disciplines, each designed to meet the needs of a variety of skill levels, from developmental through college-level study. Saddleback College's English faculty is recognized for its excellence in preparing students for upper-division work at four-year universities, and for the creativity, diversity, and innovation of the curriculum. The English curriculum is divided into the following areas: |
Composition |
Composition courses develop writing fluency, critical thinking ability, and research skills. They include grammar review as well as expository and persuasive writing instruction.
Courses include:
- Beginning Writing
- Fundamentals of Composition
- Principles of Composition I and II
|
Creative Writing |
Writers can develop skill and creativity along with critical judgement of literary forms as they compose their own nonfiction, short stories, novels, poems, plays, and screenplays in Saddleback's creative writing courses.
Offerings include courses in:
- Introductory Creative Writing Fundamentals of Poetry Fiction Novel Writing, Nonfiction Scriptwriting
- The Short Story
|
Literature |
Comprehensive literature coursework can take a reader from classical mythology through American, British and world literature to such contemporary offerings as Sex Roles in Literature, African-American Literature, Ethnic Voices In Literature, and Women Authors. The broad spectrum of literature courses allows students to focus on a particular area of interest. |
Reading |
The multi-level reading program includes both a range of classes and independent labs designed to improve vocabulary, reading comprehension, study skills, reading rates, spelling, and critical thinking. State-of-the-art technology and software programs form the core of the independent reading labs. Some independent labs are offered to meet the needs of English As a Second Language (ESL) students. |
| Writing Center |
The Writing Center aims to be a welcoming place for students to learn about and develop knowledge and skills in writing concepts, as well as to practice writing. Two lab courses are currently offered: ENG 301, a co-requisite requirement for ENG 300, Beginning Writing; and ENG 310, a 0.5 unit, C/NC lab course. In ENG 310, instructors work with each student to develop an individualized exercise plan based on a combination of web- and software-based grammar, punctuation, and usage exercises, lessons, and practice. Students at all levels of writing ability are encouraged to register! |
