Liberal Arts Division Events

The Liberal Arts Division hosts a wide array of exciting events and activities that our faculty and students can enjoy throughout the academic year! Please refer to the events below to see all upcoming and past events for the Fall 2017 to Spring 2018 Academic Year.
 

January

  • Thursday, January 25: Travel Abroad - Santander, Spain Information Meeting

    Location: Student Services Center (SSC) 212
    Time: 6:00 p.m.

    An information meeting for the summer study abroad program to Santander, Spain. This summer will mark the 25th year that Saddleback College has offered this program in Santander. The program will be held June 29th through July 30th, 2018. Students interested in participating in the study abroad program are encouraged to apply for the Gilman Scholarship. Information on the scholarship can be found at gilmanscholarship.org. 

February

  • Tuesday, February 6: International Film Festival - "La Bella Epoque"

    Location: Business General Studies (BGS) 325
    Time: 7:00 p.m.

    Join the international languages department for the screening of the 1992 film, La Belle Epoque, on Tuesday, February 6th at 7 pm in SSC 212. The 1994 Oscar-winner for Best Foreign Language Film, is about a 1931 Spanish military deserter who finds himself on a lonely farm until the farmer's four daughters pay a visit and he falls for all of them. This film is in Spanish with English subtitles. Refreshments will be served!

  • Wednesday, February 14: Lunar New Year Celebration

    Location: Business General Studies (BGS) 326 and 325 (see below for details)
    Time: Presentation at 5:00 p.m., and Reception at 6:00 p.m.

  • Tuesday, March 6: International Film Festival - "Flores De Otro Mundo"

    Location: Business General Studies (BGS) 325
    Time: 7:00 p.m.

    A screening of the Spanish language film, Flores De Otro Mundo, will be shown. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles. The film is based on a true story about rural life in present-day Spain. The story includes themes of social integration, immigration, male/female relationships and more. Refreshments will be served.

  • Friday, April 20: ESL Community Connections Event

    Location: Student Quad
    Time: 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

    Our next ESL Event will be on April 20, 2018 from 12:00-3:00 in the quad (the grassy area with the red chairs). Students and their family and friends are invited to learn more about campus support and career opportunities. There will be free food, music, games, prizes, and parking.   • Thursday, April 26: Day of Silence

    Location: Student Quad

    The Day of Silence is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior by illustrating the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT.

  • Tuesday, May 1: Journalism Open House

    Location: Learning Resource Center (LRC) 116

    Grab a slice of pizza, tour the Lariat office, and meet with members of the student newspaper, magazine, and video team. Open invite to the whole campus community. Pizza and salad (vegan, no dairy) will be served. Please contact Ali Dorri, ext. 4987 for more information.
  • Monday, May 7: Gender Conference

    The Equity and Diversity Committee presents “Implicit Bias: The Silent Killer of Diversity." The talk will be given by Carolina Bravo-Karimi, Esq. There will also be a ceremony to honor the mentors and mentees from Partners in Algebra Achievement. Dinner will follow the presentation and ceremony.

    Professor Sohila Saremi will lead the discussion of the film “The Salesman,” an Oscar Award-winner in Persian with English subtitles. Refreshments will be served after the screening.
  • Thursday, October 19: Public Reading for WALL Literary Journal

    Student writers and artists featured in the 2017 edition of Saddleback's award-winning campus publication, WALL, will read and discuss their literature and art during this public reading. Parking is available in Lots 9, 10, and 13.

  • Wednesday, November 15: Putrid Poetry Party

    Calling all English majors, undeclared majors, and bookworms: The Saddleback English Department warmly welcomes you to attend our second annual Putrid Poetry Party! Faculty will read the unintentionally hilarious poetry of William McGonagall, along with a few gems from the internet, and maybe even a poem or two written by one of your professors in her awkward junior high days. We will end with an open mic, so please bring any stinkers you’d like to share.

    In addition to being entertaining, this free event will also be informative. Come meet the English department faculty, along with representatives from Wall, The Lariat, The Oxford Study Abroad Program, and Counseling. The goal is to build community, allow you to meet other students and faculty, and inform you about opportunities for English majors. Refreshments provided!

    Attend an informational meeting about an academic and cultural experience for 10 weeks in Salamanca, Spain during the 2018 spring semester with an opportunity to study in the summer in Santander, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain.  This summer marks Carmenmara Hernandez-Bravo’s 25th anniversary of summer sessions in Santander, Spain. Stop by and also learn about getting an associate degree in Spanish.
