LAP 2006 Program Review
The tutoring services of the LAP are provided free of charge to all Saddleback College students who desire help.
We try to provide tutoring in virtually all academic subjects by maintaining a large group of skilled peer tutors.
Between 100 and 150 tutors provide Saddleback College students with over 2,000 hours of tutoring
each month.
In additional to our tutoring services, we maintain a library of
Website Links to quality online resources dedicated to course and educational study. This list of links is constantly reviewed and
updated by LAP staff. Many of these websites are so outstanding that they are frequently recommended to LAP students by our tutors.
These sites offer further assistance in several pertinent academic areas.
Our hope is that no student will be sent away from the LAP without receiving some kind of assistance.
Meet the people who are Tutor Scholarship Award winners,
the
Tutor of The Year and, have volunteered 100 or more hours and are members of our
100 & 200 Club .

The Interdisciplinary Computer Center
|
Back

The
Interdisciplinary Computer Center maintains computers connected into
the Saddleback College network, providing students a variety of
options to assist them in performing their course required tasks.

The
ICC is open to Saddleback College students at no cost on a
first-come, first-served basis. Printing is available on a laser printer for 10¢ per page using
a personal print card available on the main floor of the library.
A trained staff member is available to assist beginning computer users and to answer computer-related questions.

Instructors
throughout the college use the center to assign course dedicated
software to students enrolled in their respective courses. Any instructor who would like
to provide this service to their students in a supervised environment is invited to contact the
LAP Director, phone 949-582-4605.

Our Computer Center offers Saddleback College students the opportunity to practice their
computer skills with trained assistants available when needed.

Students who would like to improve their computer skills by assisting others
may volunteer as a computer center assistant.
Back

Our goal is to encourage and assist students in the development of their potential as independent learners.
We believe academic success is achieved as a result of understanding and developing one's own process as a learner.

Research indicates that we retain 90% of the information we learn if we do and say as we learn.
In keeping with these findings, the LAP actively involves students in course materials as much as possible.
Group discussions, sharing ideas and solutions, and probing strategies are methods used to stimulate active learning and for the development of self-confidence.
Back

The Learning Assistance Program provides three distinctive programs for registered
Saddleback College Students.
- The LAP provides free group, individual and drop-in tutoring, various workshops and tutor training.
- The Computer Center has an open-access computer lab for the preparation of written course work using computer technology.
- The Computer Center also provides facilities for instructors of a variety of courses to provide dedicated course software for their students.
Back

Various workshops are led by LAP staff members who work
closely with the Counseling Office, the Special Services program, the English as a Second
Language (ESL) program and other academic divisions to enhance the student's learning experience
at Saddleback College.
Back

On an appointmentbasis, students are eligible for one-hour of tutoring per subject per week.
The times and courses for which tutors are available are listed at the
reception desk in Library 114. Students requesting individual and/or group
tutoring are encouraged to make their appointments at least one day in
advance of the time they wish to be tutored. All appointments must be made in person.

Drop-in tutoring for mathematics, chemistry or
physics does not require an appointment, and is not limited to one hour per week.
Times and courses for drop-in tutoring are posted in the LAP on a bulletin board
next to the tutors' names and pictures.
Back
    Group
tutoring is available in several areas. This tutoring method is particularly
helpful with ESL conversation, foreign language studies, physiology,
biology, and history.
    Individual
tutoring is offered in many areas, including English composition, accounting,
ecomomics, foreign language, history, and study skills. Assistance with
scholarship applications and four-year transfer applications is available
as well.
    Drop-In
tutoring is available for mathematics, chemistry, and physics. Tutors provide
unlimited assistance to Saddleback students who are having difficulty with
a specific problem or concept.
