What is Information Competency/Literacy?
Information competency/literacy includes a variety of research and technological
skills. It incorporates standards from the Accrediting Commission for Community
and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), as well as Association of College and Research
Libraries (ACRL).
How is information competency/literacy brought into the learning environment?
Different institutions incorporate information literacy skills into the curriculum in different ways. Here at Saddleback it is intergrated across the curriculum..............................
Information competency/literacy can include many
different topics here are some examples:
- Familiar with the library's website
- Ability to search the library's online catalog
- Ability to access and use periodical databases
- Ability to locate relevant library material
- Ability to evaluate the quality of library material obtained, including websites
- Demonstrate research skills
- Demonstrate the ability to distinguish the difference between primary and secondary sources
- Demonstate the ability to use style guide, such as, APA and MLA
- Understand issues with plagiarism
