Reading, English, and Math Placement

Student that have completed the assessment exams will find their placement results on My Site or they can be obtained from the Matriculation Office in Village 8 with proper identification. Please review the following information to help understand your placement results. We recommend that all students see a counselor to determine which courses to enroll in.

Reading Placement

The student takes the Nelson-Denny form H Vocabulary/Comprehension test for Reading assessment and placement recommendation.Reading Sequence Chart

Your Reading placement for English 340, English 180, and English 170 at Saddleback College is determined in one of the following ways:

English 340 Reading Skills for College:

  • Matriculation assessment based on the scores from the Nelson-Denny form H exam taken at Saddleback College.

English 180 Speed Reading and Comprehension Training:

  • Matriculation assessment based on the scores from the Nelson-Denny form H exam taken at Saddleback College.

English 170 Reasoning and College Reading:

  • Matriculation assessment based on the scores from the Nelson-Denny form H exam taken at Saddleback College.
  • Completion of English 1A with a grade of C or better at Saddleback College.

English Placement

Your English placement for English 300/340, English 200, English 1A and English 1B at Saddleback College is determined in one of the following ways with additional multiple criteria:

English 340 Reading Skills for College:

  • Matriculation assessment based on the scores from the Nelson-Denny form H exam taken at Saddleback College.

English 300 Beginning Writing:

  • Matriculation assessment based on the scores from the Accuplacer Sentence Skills exam taken at Saddleback College.
  • English placement results from another accredited community college showing course placement.

English 200 Fundamentals of Composition:

  • Matriculation assessment based on the scores from the Accuplacer Sentence Skills exam that indicates English 200 placement.
  • Completion of English 300, English 340, or ESL 350 with a grade of C or better at Saddleback College.
  • English placement results from another accredited community college showing course placement. [See Alternative Evidence]
  • Completion of the equivalent prerequisite course with a grade of C or better from another accredited college. [See Alternative Evidence]

English 1A Principles of Composition I:

  • Matriculation assessment based on the scores from the Accuplacer Sentence Skills exam that indicates English 1A placement.
  • Completion of English 200 with a grade of C or better at Saddleback College.
  • English placement results from another accredited community college showing course placement. [See Alternative Evidence]
  • Completion of the equivalent prerequisite course with a grade of C or better from another accredited college. [See Alternative Evidence]

English 1B Principles of Composition II: (Note: the Matriculation assessment exam CANNOT place you into this course)

  • English Lit/Lang AP EXAM with a score of 3 or better
  • Completion of English 1A with a grade of C or better at Saddleback College.
  • Completion of the equivalent prerequisite course with a grade of C or better from another accredited college. [See Alternative Evidence]

MATH PLACEMENT

Students enrolling in a math course other than Math 351 or if you are required to complete the Matriculation process must take one of the MDTP assessment exams or show alternative evidence of completion of the prerequisite course from another accredited college.

Math Sequence ChartStudents may choose the test they wish to take by reviewing the sample Math questions. Depending on the chosen test and test performance, the recommendations may vary. Listed below are the types of tests and possible recommendations.

Test 1: Pre - Algebra Competency

This test covers topics from Pre-Algebra including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions, signed numbers, and decimals, as well as solutions of basic algebraic equations.
Test: 50 questions
Time: 45 minutes
Possible Placement:

  • Math 351
  • Math 251

Test 2: Elementary Algebra Competency

This exam covers topics from Algebra 1 or beginning Algebra including the solutions of linear equations and inequalities, operations with polynomials, and basic geometry.
Test: 50 questions
Time: 45 minutes
Possible Placement:

  • Take Lower Test/HS Trans
  • Math 251
  • Math 205
  • Math 253

Test 3: Intermediate Algebra Competency

This exam covers topics from Algebra II, Trigonometry, or Intermediate Algebra including exponential, radical, and logarithmic expressions, functional notation, graphing, and solutions of quadratic equations.
Test: 45 questions
Time: 45 minutes
Possible Placement:

  • Take Lower Test/HS Trans
  • Math 205
  • Math 253
  • Math 7
  • Math 8
  • Math 9
  • Math 10
  • Math 124
  • Math 11

Test 4: Pre - Calculus Competency

This exam covers topics from Math Analysis or Pre-Calculus including polynomials, trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions.
Test: 40 questions
Time: 60 minutes
Possible Placement:

  • Take Lower Test/HS Trans
  • Math 2
  • Math 3A

See Counselor (Reading & English)

Top Menu

Students that receive the "See Counselor" placement on the English portion of the assessment exam, did not meet the lowest cut-off score for Reading and/or English (writing) placement. Students that have received the See Counselor placement must make a counseling appointment to determine which English course is appropriate. Students may be directed to take the ESL (English as a Second Language) placement exam.

Take Lower Test/HS Trans (Math)

Students that do not meet the lowest cut-off score in math exam levels 2,3, or 4 will receive a "Take Lower Test or HS Trans" notation on their placement letter. Students who receive this recommendation have the option to take a lower level math test at the next available testing period or repeat the same math assessment test after a three month waiting period. Students may also Challenge a lower than desired placement or Take Lower Test score by completing the High School Math Challenge.
