National Science Foundation
The NSF is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense..." With an annual budget of about $6.06 billion, the NSF if the funding source for approx. 20% of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. The Science Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships of up to $10,000 per year for 2 years to eligible Saddleback College students for use after they transfer to a four-year college or university. Financial need is not a criteria for this scholarship, however it may be considered in making final selections. The Foundation was instituted by a former Saddleback student who thought highly of chemistry in general and Saddleback's Chemistry Department in particular. The Science Lecture Series is a weekly forum designed to give students the chance to meet renowned scientists and learn about their area of expertise. This series provides an opportunity to explore an astonishing range of topics with scientific value, including advancements in technologies and emerging research. Dr. Jim Zoval heads a student research group that assists an international research group based at UC Irvine. The research is focused on the development of an Automated Wearable Artificial Kidney (AWAK).
